Torrey Pines on My Mind

May is here, meaning the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines is now only a page away on the calendar.

I, for one, am getting really excited. As a San Diego native who still lives close by, I feel bad admitting I haven’t played the South Course in a while, but I intend to remedy that very soon. From talking to friends who’ve recently played it and Torrey Pines employees, the course is in tremendous shape and will only get better as the first round approaches on June 12.

Whether or not you’re a San Diego resident, I encourage you to play the South Course before it closes on May 21. I know getting a tee time is difficult and rates aren’t as cheap as they used to be, but come on, when’s the last time you were able to say you played on a U.S. Open course a month before the tournament was going to be there?

Regardless of skill level, any round on the South right now will be a challenge because the rough is thick and the greens are fast (but not as fast as they will be for the pros). Don’t look at the round as a chance to pad your handicap – for true lovers of golf, this is a unique opportunity to get a taste of what our national championship has in store for the competitors.

The last time the Open was in Southern California was 1948, probably before most of you were born. And it was at Riviera County Club in Los Angeles, a course you aren’t able to play unless you’re a member or have friends in high places (and if you do, can I meet them?).

Time’s wasting, even as you’re reading this. Whether you take a weekend or a day off work, do whatever it takes to experience the South Course at Torrey Pines before it shuts down. You’ll be glad you did.
