IF THE SHOE FITS...

With its latest line, Ecco is putting its best foot forward on the golf course

By Catherine RislingPublished: November, 2006

When it comes to comfort on the golf course, the secret is in the sole. And athletes will tell you, if their feet are crippled from ill-fitting shoes, it's bound to affect the quality of their game.

Just ask tour pros Fred Couples, Colin Montgomerie or Juli Inkster. They all wear Ecco shoes - and not for the paycheck.

Long recognized for its successful take on shoes from the street to the golf course, this Danish company continues to release fashionable styles and functional designs. Ecco's ultra-soft, top-grade leather and high performance technology distinguish its line of nearly 100 different shoes in 25 styles.

What follows is a peek at three styles we think will be flying off the shelves this season.

Flexor Hydromax
$180
Ecco is standing by its assertion that these shoes will repel water by offering a two-year waterproof guarantee. They've taken their popular street shoe and applied its durability, flexibility and cushion design to a golf shoe.
And the response has been overwhelming.

"The Flexor Collection features a completely new, asymmetric fit," says C.B. Tuite, general sales manager for Ecco Golf Division. "It offers a snug instep and spacious toe box that many players find ideal."

The Flexor shoe features the Q-Lok spike system, polyurethane inserts that provide great traction, are less brutal on the greens and feature easy-to-see wear indicators.

In addition to the white/titanium/black shoe pictured above, the Flexor Hydromax is also available with brown or titanium-silver lizard detailing.

Casual Cool
$160
Introduced last season to great success, the Casual Cool Collection is returning with updated styles. The white/orange color combo has gotten the most attention so far, but if the palette is a bit too daring for your tastes, the interlocking textile ribbon design can also be found in kiwi green or baja blue. Or, consider brown or black shoe styles with less color distinction.

The street-smart shoes also deliver a more snug fit, as the ribbon ties can be tightened with the shoe laces.

"The Casual Cool created a real buzz in the marketplace last year, and the response to the new styles has been tremendous," Tuite said.

The leather is water repellent and perspiration resistant and the superior design means greater shock absorption and real comfort.

Classic Crossfire
$160
Ecco forecasted the trends and saw a demand for patterned leather. With this in mind, their designers added the high-grade embossed detailing to the Classic Crossfire shoe, pictured above in white with a rustic brown crocodile design.

"One of the reasons why this shoe took off was that Fred Couples put it into play last year at the Masters," Tuite said, "and it got a lot of attention."

The Classic Crossfire's updated saddle design is available in five color combinations, including tone-on-tone black and brown options.   n
