![]() Ashworth melds comfort with traditional styling. Fairway & Greene has reintroduced cashmere. Callaway Golf Apparel has updated its fall line with bolder stripes and softer sweaters. Women’s lines, too, are equal parts form and function, with a palette of purples brightening the season. The look is sporty, yet fitting and fashionable off the course. Here are some ensembles from the industry’s top golf apparel companies that will have you looking sporty for all occasions. Ashworth If the line is good enough for Fred Couples, it’s certainly well suited for Southland golfers. This season, Ashworth’s popular jacquard knit shirts ($69.50) are overlaid with stripes, which creates a subtle combination of richer hues. For example, a tango orange is mixed with charcoal gray, resulting in a deep Bordeaux. “Color is always important,” said Gary Sims, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Ashworth and Callaway Golf Apparel. “But fit is critical. The traditional golf shirt was oversized for comfort; with performance like Ashworth Weather Systems, the fit is smaller and more flattering. It’s dressy but it’s functional to play in.” Ashworth brings its same approach to color combinations with its knitwear. Sweaters this season are more lightweight and will be a regular on the course, Sims said. The lambs wool sweater ($100) and the cashmere sweater ($250) are sophisticated choices. Callaway Golf Apparel If you’re headed to a dressy affair after a round, Callaway Golf Apparel’s Collection line is a great choice. “The line is consistent with a golfer who’s stepping on the course with his brand new $500 driver,” Sims said. This season, Callaway has focused on softer sweaters and lighter fabrications for a comfortable fit. Lightweight shirt jackets with wider stripes and bolder colors also are on tap. The Phoenician Stripe in royal blue, ecru and red ($89.50) is a three-button golf shirt with contrasting neckband and inside placket in fine Egyptian cotton. Italian-made cotton knits, lauded as some of the best knit fabrics in the world, are featured in the Collection line’s sweaters. The Perry Como Sweater, available in red, brown and royal blue, is a cashmere crew neck ($295). The Joey Bishop Vest ($85) is an Italian merino wool V-neck available in brown, light camel, black, tango, royal blue and eggplant. Cutter & Buck While browns and soft blues are returning this season, they’re bringing with them perky plums and lavender. “Purple is a key trend going forward, so we have introduced a classic violet color, frosted plum, in the fall 2005 collection,” said Michelle Robinson of Cutter & Buck’s women’s line. “We pay attention to the smallest details in our styling, fabric and trim. We combine a modern view with a traditional focus.” Cutter & Buck has freshened its line of quilted vests with a contrasting quilt stitch, which joins the vest’s circle quilt and box quilt designs. The reversible Manor Vest ($98) is available in frosted plum, mercury, black and adventurine. The vest is also available in lavender with a faux fur lining. The vest, when paired with the Dry Tec Camilla Polo ($72) and the Moonlight Pant ($126) with its frosted plum stripe, is a new season favorite. Fairway & Greene Fairway & Greene’s Mercerized Pima Fawn shirts ($80-$85) are typical of the golf line’s signature subtle stripes and patterns. They’re a reliable favorite, but they’re not the only golf clothing in Fairway & Greene’s closet. This season the jacquard shirts ($85) are brighter — the expanded nine-color line ranges from marine and port to tweed and alabaster — and the sweaters and vests are some of the most comfortable you’ll find. The Mongolian Cashmere double-zip vest ($300) mixes teal and tweed, while the Two-Ply Mongolian Cashmere four-button sweater ($250) is a warm heather hue. Lija by Linda Hipp We couldn’t pass up mentioning a few pieces from Lija’s line of women-only apparel. Hipp successfully combines textures typically found in men’s clothing with feminine retro styles and bold color combinations. The Purple Rain Collection, in particular, is an interchangeable assemblage of argyle, plaid and floral patterns in plum, pink and white hues. There was a time when oversized was the style of the day, but Lija shows women that a tailored look can also be functional on the course with the right blend of spandex, nylon and cotton fabrics. Since plum is the color of the season, the Cashmere Argyle Vest ($120) and L’Amour 3/4 Sleeve Polo ($85) matched with the Plaid Capri Pant ($110) is a favorite combination. If purple isn’t your thing, check out the season’s other collections that feature chocolate brown, pumpkin and soft blue hues in plaid, circle, paisley and check designs. n |
