Phil Mickelson, who is slated to make his 2008 PGA Tour debut this week in the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines, will be “confined to bed for two days” prior to Wednesday’s pro-am so he can cope with a recurring respiratory problem. Mickelson, a San Diego resident who has won the La Jolla event three times, was scheduled to participate in a pre-tournament press conference Tuesday morning. But Monday afternoon Mickelson's management company, Gaylord Sports, announced he would not be there. A published release said: “Mickelson has been plagued by heavy congestion, shortness of breath and fatigue since October (2007). It's unclear whether the condition was caused by working in the smoky debris on his property following the wildfires that devastated Mickelson's (Rancho Santa Fe) neighborhood, or by the illness he developed immediately after that in Singapore. He managed to win the HSBC Champions the following week in Shanghai but has not felt 100 percent since then. Mickelson's condition worsened over the weekend and the doctor gave his order this morning.” The No. 2 player in the world, Mickelson missed a portion of his 2007 campaign due to a wrist injury sustained while hitting out of the rough at Oakmont Country Club a few weeks prior to the U.S. Open.
