Hoffman runs a website that connects women to the fashion and social networking aspects of the game. For Wentz, her Golf For Business venture started when a friend made a donation to play in a charity golf tournament and then became worried that she’d embarrass herself because of her lack of knowledge about the game and how these outings worked. So Wentz, a former business educator, started teaching women about the dynamics of charity events and how to play golf with the boss and clients. “I don’t teach how to play the game, but rather how to enjoy tournament play and take advantage of the networking possibilities,” said Wentz, an 18-handicapper at Costa Mesa Country Club who is active in organizations such as Executive Women in Golf and the Women’s Southern California Golf Association. Hoffman stresses that “there are lots of women business owners missing out on one of the more beneficial aspects of the game — golf as a networking tool. And that’s what I teach.” A CPA by profession, Hoffman noticed that “the lifestyle of golf was not being promoted to women,” so she started Women on Course to rectify that situation. “Women on Course activities accentuate the parts of golf I love — like being outdoors and being surrounded by the beauty of a golf course,” she said. “Golf also is a great social way to enjoy people in which you are doing something other than eating and drinking.” Members of Women on Course learn about golf’s lifestyle in a casual manner. “Women want activities that are laid back,” Hoffman said about her group’s events, which are held in 20 cities around the country. “Our membership doesn’t involve commitments, because our members are committed to so much in their lives.” Women On Course offers Golf Experience events, which include lunch and a speaker. One such speaker is Tina Mickelson, Phil’s sister and a Callaway ambassador who will address an audience at La Costa this month. The Golf Experience events — and there are six coming up this summer in Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego, are created with a something-for-everyone mentality. “For new golfers, we do an orientation and a beginner’s golf clinic,” Hoffman said. “For those with a little more experience, we have a clinic followed by four holes of golf. For those a little more comfortable and confident, it’s a nine-hole scramble.” But the best part? “Our 19th hole festivities top off the day with wine, food and prizes among new friends and colleagues.” For more information on either group, visit womenoncourse.com or golfforbusinessinc.com.
