Money talks

Giving back to the community regardless of economic conditions is a truly noble gesture, which is why we commend Tijeras Creek Golf Club and OB Sports.

BY ROB LYON AND ERIC MARSONPublished: November, 2009

Golf is fun. Golf is relaxing. Golf is challenging. Golf is exasperating. Golf is expensive. Golf is time-consuming. Golf is many things, but when it comes to giving back to the community and society at large, we are convinced of one thing: Golf is good.

Start at the top, at least in terms of exposure. Last May, the PGA Tour announced that $1 billion had been raised by its organization between 1935 and 2005. A new marketing campaign to promote its fund-raising efforts has prompted the Tour to estimate that it will raise another $1 billion by 2015.

But the amount of charity dollars raised by golf doesn’t end with the PGA Tour, its affiliates (the Champions and Nationwide tours) or the LPGA Tour.

Hundreds of golf events across the country tee off nearly every week of the year, raising money for causes such as melanoma research and curing autism. And many of those tournaments are helped a great deal by the presence of celebrities drawn from the sports and entertainment world.

Celebrity tournaments are such a huge part of the Southern California charity landscape that we felt it appropriate to make this month’s cover story about 10 of the funniest celebrities who do their part in helping raise money.

Though the PGA Tour and celebrity tournaments get the lion’s share of the attention and acclaim, there are many other golf organizations that are doing great work far below the national radar, such as allowing high school and college golf teams to use their facilities and hosting junior clinics and family days.

At least one Southern California course is doing a small part by decreasing the financial load for families with kids in college. Tijeras Creek Golf Club, a Rancho Santa Margarita course that ranks among the finest high-end daily-fee facilities in Southern California, last month awarded cash scholarships to local college freshmen to help offset their education costs.

Mission Viejo’s Nick Powers, a freshman at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and Santa Ana’s Philip Gurule, who attends Cal State Fullerton, received the $500 scholarships as part of the Tijeras Creek/OB Sports Scholarship program, which allows children whose parents are enrolled in the Creek Card loyalty program at Tijeras Creek to apply for a scholarship.

The two honorees were selected based on their level of academic success. Powers, the son of Creek Card member Jim Powers, graduated from Capistrano Valley High School with a cumulative 4.0 grade point average. Gurule, the son of Creek Card member David Gurule, graduated from Santa Ana High School with a GPA of 4.5.

As we all know, times are very, very tough for nearly everybody, and golf courses are certainly not immune to the economic downturn. For a golf management company (11 other OB Sports-managed golf facilities across the country, including three in Las Vegas, also participate) to even retain a program like this in a foreboding economic climate is highly commendable.

We salute the people at OB Sports and Tijeras Creek. Their efforts are indicative of the proactive role that golf can play in the lives of those who love to play the game. We would love to see more golf-related businesses find creative ways to give back to the community that helps them stay in business.
