This year’s Best Of list differs from previous years in one important regard: We opened it to you, our readers. And as we perused our readers’ choices, something became glaringly clear to each of us, something so fundamentally important about golf in Southern California that we would be remiss to not mention it: Southern California golf is, hands down, the best in the world. Think about it. What other comparable area in the world can boast of top-tier public golf courses like Pelican Hill Golf Club, Torrey Pines Golf Course, La Costa Resort and Spa, Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms Resort, Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles and the host of other resort and high-end, daily-fee courses that populate the area. Add our world-class private tracks, which range from Riviera and Los Angeles country clubs, to Santa Ana Country Club and the Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe, and our golf real estate is second to none. Then there are our golfers. From household names such as Amy Alcott, Billy Casper, Gene Littler, Mark O’Meara, Corey Pavin and Mickey Wright, to reigning superstars such as Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, to tomorrow’s top-shelf talent like Rickie Fowler, Southern California has produced some of the world’s top golfers for more than 50 years. Our area’s events also trump any other: from the PGA Tour’s annual stops in Los Angeles, San Diego and the Coachella Valley to the Champions Tour’s Toshiba Classic in Newport Beach, the LPGA’s Kraft Nabisco Championship, and the Nationwide Tour’s Soboba Golf Classic. You want teaching professionals? In one national golf publication’s list of America’s top 100 golf instructors, 10 of them hailed from Southern California, ranging from emeritus members like Eddie Merrins of Bel-Air Country Club and San Diegan Phil Rodgers, to Brady Riggs of Woodley Lakes Golf Course in Van Nuys and Pelican Hill’s Glenn Deck. Then, of course, there is the natural setting: From mountains and deserts to the ocean and rugged canyons, all of it resting in one of the world’s most sun-blessed, temperate climates. Add it all together and we’re confident that if a list of the best golf regions in the world were ever accumulated, Southern California would win by a landslide. |
