Membership drive

Teeing it up at a private club is a privilege that all avid golfers should try to experience at least once.

This month’s cover story features our 10 favorite private clubs in Southern California.

Whether immersed in a century of history and tradition (Hacienda Golf Club, Virginia Country Club), routinely named among the world’s best courses (Los Angeles and Riviera country clubs), honored with a star-studded membership (Bel-Air Country Club), the host of a professional tournament (Newport Beach Country Club), ranked among the toughest courses in the state (The Farms Golf Club) or renowned as gorgeously lush (the Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe, the Madison Club, Shady Canyon Golf Club), we feel our choices compare with the 10 best private clubs anywhere in the country.

But the thing to remember is these choices were anything but easy. For every club we chose, there were easily five more across the region that could have made the list.

So, if you’re a member or have had the opportunity to play such top-tier courses as Santa Ana Country Club in Orange County, the Hideaway in the Coachella Valley, Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks or any of the other excellent private facilities in Southern California, please don’t feel slighted. We only had room for 10.

We’re also aware that the vast majority of our readers aren’t members of private clubs, and that many have never had the opportunity to play one. And that’s a shame. Because while there are daily-fee golf courses that embody a country-club-for-a-day feel, there’s no substitute for playing an exclusive club that is geared for one purpose — to provide a select group of members with the best possible golf experience.

But while few can afford the initiation fee and monthly dues at a private club, there are plenty of opportunities to play these courses. Most clubs schedule charity golf tournaments or other outside events, and if you happen to hear of an opportunity at a club that you’ve always dreamed about joining, we recommend you consider playing. For a few hundred bucks, you can experience the service, course conditions and atmosphere that make a private country club such an awesome experience.

Because while you can gain a country-club-for-a-day feeling at a higher-end daily-fee course in Southern California, there’s nothing like the real thing.
