What we did have was the incredible support of friends and family and, perhaps most importantly, a dream — to create and perpetuate a golf magazine that not only reported and supported our local golf community, but was an important, if not essential, part of that community. The first issue of Orange County Golf magazine had a scant 32 pages, about 10 stories and even fewer advertisers. But we managed to put it out, spending countless hours in front of the computer during evenings away from our day jobs. To our great satisfaction, we managed to publish another issue. And then another. And another. After six months, we realized we might be on to something. In 1997, we left our newspaper jobs, jumping full-time into magazine publishing. With the burgeoning success of Orange County Golf, two other regional magazines soon followed: Los Angeles and San Diego County Golf magazines. But our savviest career move was still to come. In May of 2000, we joined forces with Churm Media in a merger that allowed us to greatly expand and, in 2005, we combined our three titles into the largest, most comprehensive regional golf publication in Southern California: Southland Golf. Many golf-related magazines have come and gone in the past 15 years, and golf coverage in local papers has been greatly truncated due to cutbacks. To realize that the magazine we launched 15 years ago even exists is reason for satisfaction. But it’s not only existed, it’s evolved and matured without ever growing complacent. As evidence, spend some time perusing this month’s issue, which features a dramatic re-imagining in layout and presentation. Southland Golf has a rich history and a promising future, both in print and online. But we realize that without the support of our friends, family, staff and advertisers — such as the Newport Beach Country Club, which has been part of this magazine since the very beginning — none of this ever would have been possible. And for that, we are forever grateful. Rob Lyon and Eric Marson founded O.C. Golf in 1995, the genesis for what eventually became Southland Golf. |
