• The FedEx Cup playoffs is a futile effort. No matter how much the points system is tweaked, there will be holes. And where’s the suspense? The most tried-and-true playoff format in professional golf is match play, so why not spruce up the end of the season with mano-a-mano events?
• It’s amazing how the Ryder Cup can instantly elevate players to legendary status. Orange native Hunter Mahan was already having a solid week entering Sunday’s singles match against Paul Casey, but Mahan’s birdie bomb on Valhalla’s 17th hole already sealed the 26-year-old’s place in golf lore.
• Forget the language controversy — where is the dominant American presence on the LPGA Tour? As of press time, only four LPGA winners this season hail from the United States and only 12 of the top 50 players in the Women’s World Golf Rankings are American. Ouch.
