Thoughts from Rd. 1 of NCAA Women's Championships

While Jennifer Song regains her form, Brianna Do and Glory Yang bail out UCLA.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: May, 2010

The NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships kicked off Tuesday at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. The first round of the 72-hole event concluded with USC (6-under 282) holding a two-shot lead over Purdue. UCLA is six shots back and tied for third along with fellow pre-tournament favorites and former national champions Arizona State and Duke.

Individually, USC sophomore Jennifer Song is tied for the lead with Arizona State freshman Jennifer Johnson (La Quinta) and Purdue’s Maude-Aimee LeBlanc at 5-under.

The tournament continues with 18 holes each day until Friday’s final round. Visit Golfstat.com for complete live scoring.

Here are some of my thoughts through the first round:

USC couldn’t have asked for a better start. Even though the Trojans came into the NCAA Championships with momentum following their win at the Central Regional, their top player, Jennifer Song, wasn’t exhibiting the same stellar form she did in the fall and early spring. That changed in the first round at Landfall, as the sophomore made four birdies, an eagle on the short par-5 18th and only one bogey for a share of the lead. And even when veterans Lizette Salas and Belen Mozo failed to break par (74 and 73, respectively), freshman Cyna Rodriguez picked up the slack with a season-best 68. If Song stays strong and the rest of her supporting cast can hang around par for the remaining 54 holes (not much to ask a team as talented as USC), the Trojans will be very, very tough to beat.

Brianna Do and Glory Yang bailed out UCLA. Of the Bruins’ top five players, Do and Yang have posted the highest scoring averages this season. But the pair of Southern California residents assembled UCLA’s two lowest totals of the first round, while stalwarts Stephanie Kono and Tiffany Lua both struggled with 76s. The Bruins have ground to make up on pacesetter and familiar rival USC, but they can take solace in the fact that they didn’t instantly play themselves out of the season’s most competitive and pressure-packed event.

Don’t count out Pepperdine. No player on the Waves broke par during the first day, disappointing for a squad that came in with title aspirations. The Malibu school had a similar fate to open the 2009 NCAA Championships, beginning in 17th place before rising to ninth. Fifteen strokes is a wide margin between the Waves and the Trojans, but with a talented, well-rounded bunch that’s been boosted by the early arrival of freshman Danielle Kang, Pepperdine could soon sneak back up the leaderboard.
