Celebrity golf tournaments are a great way to raise funds for charity, but every area event that helps a good cause is worthy of the spotlight.

By Eric Marson and Rob LyonPublished: October, 2008

This month’s issue puts the focus on celebrity golf. Inside you’ll find stories about 10 star-driven tournaments in the area, a Q&A with actor Joe Mantegna, a look at why officials at the PGA Tour stop in Las Vegas are excited to have Justin Timberlake on board, and a profile on David Mirisch, who popularized the concept of using celebrities to help organizations raise funds for charity.

We annually devote editorial space in Southland Golf to highlight this subject, and the reasons are twofold: Nothing attracts attention like the sight of a glamorous celebrity on a magazine cover, and we live in a prime location for celebrity golf events.

But emphasizing celebrity golf tournaments for one month each year doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten about the charity events in the area that don’t have household names in their fields. In fact, the vast majority of area charity tournaments are staged without stars and without fanfare.

But the money these events raise, as well as the awareness they create, is just as important for their respective causes. And while many of the people who play in these events can’t afford to pay top dollar for the chance to tee it up next to Samuel L. Jackson or Joe Pesci, they participate because it’s a way to have a fun day on the golf course and feel good about doing something for someone in need or less fortunate.

The examples are numerous.

Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo will be the site of a tournament this month organized by the Chase Edler Humanitarian Foundation. Named after an Orange County native who spent much of his young life helping build orphanages in Mexico, Thailand and Nicaragua, the event will raise money specifically for a youth ministry in downtown Los Angeles that helps homeless young people.

Next month, Seacliff Country Club in Huntington Beach will play host to a tournament for the El Viento Foundation, which tracks groups of children from fourth grade through high school graduation in an effort to keep them focused on improving their lives and scholastic achievement.

Those are just two of the tournaments in the area that use golf to help raise needed funds for important endeavors, such as medical research, homeless shelters, humanitarian concerns, athletic and scholastic programs, animal protection and helping families of wounded soldiers.

In times of economic stress and when public dollars seem harder to come by, the work of these charity golf tournaments is even more essential. And, ever since we highlighted these causes in our first issue, we’ve worked to help ensure that they receive ample attention, be it through event listings or coverage of the tournament.

The people who organize, staff and play in these events aren’t stars accustomed to the spotlight. And they don’t often get their names in the newspaper  or their faces on TV.

But what they do for the charities they support is definitely worthy of a standing ovation.
