Airport expansion plans could turn Newport Beach Golf Course into a nine-hole track.

By Joel BeersPublished: June, 2007

The Orange County Board of Supervisors is considering the possibility of ending a 32-year lease with the Newport Beach Golf Course.

Officials from John Wayne Airport, which also sits on land owned by the county, are looking into the feasibility of taking over the lease on the back nine of the executive course.

Another property owner owns the land used for the course’s front nine, driving range and clubhouse.

“The county of Orange owns the back nine holes [used by the course] and that area is a runway protection zone,” said airport spokesperson Courtney Wiercioch. “The FAA requires low-density zones around airports that are used as parks, open space and parking areas that don’t include large structures.”

Even if the county grants the lease to the airport, there are no plans to make the additional 30 acres public parking, Wiercioch said.

“No decisions have been made and it’s early in the process, but the director [is charged] with letting the board know what needs the airport has now that it didn’t 30 years ago,” she said.

The Newport Beach Golf Course opened in 1975 as a par-59, 3,216-yard course.   SG
