Talega Golf Club has received plenty of accolades since opening in 2001. But one thing the San Clemente course has lacked is a major amateur golf championship. That changes this August, when Talega hosts the inaugural South Orange County Men's Amateur Championship, a two-day tournament open to all amateur golfers above the age of 16. While there are some prestigious amateur championships held at courses in south Orange County, this is the first time that the geographic designation of south Orange County will be used in the title. While the name might not matter too much to golfers, since the event is open to any amateur, the fact that it's hosted by one of south Orange County's most heralded courses should draw considerable interest. "We figured our golf course is ready to do something like this," said Talega general manager David Foster. "It's a really good golf course with four sets of tees and we think it's time for something like this. We're going to make it a really nice event with great prizes that we're planning on holding for years to come." The tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday August 18-19. It is open to all amateurs 16 and over with a verifiable SCGA handicap. Players with no handicap can play in the scratch flight. Foster anticipates about 100 golfers for the event, which will most likely feature four flights. The entry fee in this 36-hole stroke play event is $280, which includes two rounds of golf, range balls each day, lunch and prizes. Call (949) 369-6226 or visit talegagolfclub.com |
