Ten Reasons Why Eli Miller Loves the Game

The 2008 Best of Southern California golf issue.

By Eli MillerPublished: April, 2008

I grew up in San Diego, and I admit my bias slants toward America's Finest City when it comes to identifying the best parts about golf in Southern California. But read on and you'll realize I'm not a total homer.

Torrey Pines
I love Torrey Pines because of its stunning location that exudes a mesmerizing aura. I also appreciate the challenge of the relentless South Course. There are venues that are more accessible, but I'll never forget playing there with my friends on Fridays after school or waking up at 5:15 in the morning on summer days to get a round in before the day got away.

Tiger Woods
Speaking of the best, how can the Cypress native not be one of the best parts about golf in our area? Do you even want to think what the game would be like without him?

Industrial Center of North San Diego County
Callaway. Titleist. TaylorMade. All within a few miles of each other. Wow. It's hard not to get excited about golf equipment when you know the next break-through is being developed in our backyard.

The 2008 U.S. Open
This year's national championship will be played at my favorite course. Enough said.

Buick Invitational
The best municipal course also has the region's best PGA Tour stop. Besides the Target World Challenge, it offers the only consistent opportunity to watch Tiger Woods compete in Southern California, and I relish watching how the world's best players handle the challenging course I played growing up.

Used club bins at golf stores
It's always exciting to test out new clubs, but I also love searching for bargains. That's why you can often find me by the used club bins at The Golf Mart in San Diego or Roger Dunn Golf Shops in Orange County.

Breezy days near the ocean
My ideal Southern California golf scenario is a round at an oceanfront course - preferably Torrey Pines or Trump National - with temperatures in the high 60s to low 70s and calm breezes. Chamber of Commerce, baby.

Executive courses
I appreciate the value of an executive course for beginners, players who want to work on their short games, or anyone who wants a less-stressful round accompanied by a cold beverage or two (or three?). Places such as Mission Bay Golf Course, where I had my first job as a driving range picker, Newport Beach Golf Course and Pine Glen at Sycuan Resort are a nice change of pace.

Options
So many courses, so little time. Southern California has loads of options for every golfer, regardless of skill, income, location or time constraints. It's not the only region with such attributes, but I'm certainly proud to call it home.

Temperate desert days
Weather in the Coachella Valley this time of the year runs a close second to breezy days near the ocean.
