Ten Reasons Why Eric Marson and Rob Lyon Love the Game

The 2008 Best of Southern California golf issue.

By Eric Marson and Rob LyonPublished: April, 2008

We were raised on O.C. courses and have been playing golf in Southern California for 35 years, so we'd like to think we know a thing or two about golf in the region. Here are some of the things we've enjoyed along the way:

VIP days at Black Gold and Desert Willow
Somehow our names always end up on the list when these Kemper Sports-managed courses in Yorba Linda and Palm Desert put on galas for vendors, city leaders and hacks like us. Whether it's the Survivor Challenge or the Azalea Open, the events are always fun to attend and we'll continue to go as long as we're invited.

Southland Golf magazine
We're a little biased on this one, but we started publishing a regional golf magazine 13 years ago. In that time, we've published more than 150 issues, more than 14,000 pages and more than 6 million magazines. That's worthy of something, isn't it?

La Quinta and La Costa
Whether it's the Spanish-style casitas at La Quinta - not to mention the 41 pools, spa and five golf courses - or the elegant guest rooms and suites at La Costa (below) - as well as the 36 holes of golf and the new spa - you really can't go wrong staying at either of these resorts.

The courses we grew up playing
As junior golfers we were fortunate enough to play often in Southern California and we'll never forget some of the memories we have playing courses such as Dad Miller, Anaheim Hills, Green River, San Clemente, San Juan Hills, Birch Hills and Los Coyotes Country Club. We still enjoy playing them to this day.

George C. Thomas
Riviera. Bel-Air. The North Course at Los Angeles Country Club. Three of the most revered and respected tracks in the country were sculpted by this great architect. If you've played any of these courses, you know exactly why he's on our list.

Dining with an ocean view
Some of our favorite spots include Monarch Beach Golf Links, Pelican Hill Golf Club and Trump National. They're the best in the business when it comes to food and ocean views.

Roger Dunn Golf Shop in Santa Ana
Maybe it's because we practically grew up in the store around the corner from our office, but the Roger Dunn in Santa Ana always has been a golfer's playground. Where else can you see such an assortment of clubs, putters, accessories, shoes and apparel?

The teaching staff at Arroyo Trabuco
You'd be hard-pressed to find a more talented group of teaching professionals - including Bob Lasken and Sandra Palmer - than the ones at this Mission Viejo club. Add Dr. David Wright, Perry Parker, Trapper Perkins, Randy Chang, director of golf Peter Dalkas, Geoff Cram and 2007 U.S. Open qualifier Michael Block, and you've got more golf expertise than you can shake a 2-iron at.

The Tiger Woods Learning Center
It's next to Anaheim's Dad Miller Golf Course, but golf is not a priority here. It's about helping underprivileged kids get a better education. And each of those students have the greatest player in the game to thank for that.

Eddie Merrins
Known as the Little Pro, Merrins worked at Bel-Air Country Club for more than 45 years and also served as UCLA's golf coach from 1975 to 1989. His demeanor makes him a wonderful part of the community, and he's the consummate professional.
