After 27 years of chasing a little white ball, I've become a self-described golf snob. That said, I have not lost the nostalgic feelings I have for the muni-tracks and night-lit ranges I grew up on. Here are some things that still to fuel my love for the game. Variety I love that there are more than 100 courses within an hour's drive of my home. That number exceeds 200 if I add an extra 15 minutes to include all of the desert and Orange County to the mix. Desert golf in the summer There's something about playing amazing desert courses for less than half the price in 110-degree heat. It's equal parts survivalism and pure golf enjoyment. The SCPGA Junior Tour I love that it's been around for 60 years. I love that John Cook played on it. I love that Tiger played on it. I love that I played on it, and it's pretty cool to think that my son could play on it someday as well. Creative architects Cal Olsen went outside the box when he designed The Links at Summerly in Lake Elsinore. He crafted a true links-style course that is fun and entertaining. The great architects use the land creatively, and too many of them forget that the average player carries a 20 handicap. Daylight saving time There's nothing better than heading out to play on the first Sunday afternoon of extended sunlight. The only thing that makes it more enjoyable is when the temperature creeps into the 80s and you can wear shorts. Courteous golf managers I want to be treated like a guest at a course that is well-manicured. I want to pay a reasonable green fee and never have to take longer than four-and-a-half hours to complete a round. I'm paying for that privilege. Murrieta Valley golf range The practice tee is entirely grass, and the golf balls always seem new. There's a decent short game area and a huge putting green. I can easily spend 90 minutes there for six bucks. Time and money well spent. The 18th hole at Riviera There's something cool about knowing that Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods all stood in the same place and looked at the same final tee shot. Torrey Pines South This is my favorite public course. All the greats have played there. It's tough but fair and something every golfer should experience. The views at Trump National It's not my favorite layout, but the views from the course and the clubhouse are second to none in Southern California. |
