Growing up on the outskirts of Los Angeles, I never realized there was a golf course in the area where I lived, but I played my first round at Brookside when I was 16. My best-of list includes courses where I learned to play and things I would never have had the opportunity to do if it was not for Southland Golf magazine. Media Days A day of golf is better than a day at the office. It's even better when you're getting paid to attend the event, play golf and dine on a nice spread after the round. Ironically, I thought I would play more golf when I took this gig, but it has been quite the contrary. Golf 'N' Stuff I begged my dad to take me there after watching the "Karate Kid." I haven't been back since I hit the links. Brookside Golf Club I played my first round on a regulation course here, and it's always a pleasure to return to the 36-hole track. Cherrystone's charity tournament A great event that benefits the Gardena Project. The after-party is phenomenal with great food and musical entertainment by Jazz artists Michael Paulo and Hiroshima at Cherrystone's in Gardena. Industry Hills There isn't a better short-game practice area in the San Gabriel Valley. Upland Hills The short par 4s at this course are abundant, but your scorecard will still have big numbers if you don't drive or putt well. The Los Angeles Open You can change the name, but you can't ignore the history, and I love watching the annual event at Riviera Country Club. I've caddied in the pro-am and covered it from the press tent. It holds a special place in my heart. Arroyo Trabuco BBQ After your round at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club, O'Neill's Bar and Grille is a great place to relax. The beverages are always cold and food is great. I recommend the pulled pork barbeque sandwich with country-style fries. Arroyo Seco To say this is a pitch-and-putt course isn't giving it enough credit. The par-3 layout makes you hit different types of shots into the greens and it's excellent for your short game. Primm Valley A Tom Fazio-designed course near Sin City. Need I say more? |
