Our Picks • SAN DIEGO—Forbes Travel Guide has awarded the Grand Del Mar hotel a five-star rating, the first such rating for a San Diego hotel. The Grand Del Mar also is the only property in California to be awarded three 2012 five-star ratings for lodging, spa and dining. Only 57 hotels in the world, and five in the United States, hold the Forbes five-star designation. In addition to 249 guest rooms and suites, the hotel features San Diego’s only Tom Fazio-designed championship golf course. • Registration is continuing for the fifth annual San Diego Junior Amateur Championship, which will be played Dec. 28-30. The event is presented by Future Champions Golf and Callaway Golf. Divisions include boys and girls age 8 and under, and ages 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-18. Boys and girls between the ages of 15 and 18 will play separate 54-hole events, with a cut after 36 holes. Play will take place at Steele Canyon Golf Club and the Willow Glen, Oak Glen and Pine Glen courses at the Sycuan Resort. Former champions include Chris Williams (now playing for the University of Washington), Todd Baek (San Diego State Univeristy), and Beau Hossler (U.S. Open competitor) and LPGA player Casie Cathrea.
