A quality option

It’s hard to find a municipal venue that offers as much as Anaheim Hills Golf Course.

Calling a publicly owned golf facility a “muni” often conjures negative connotations. The conditioning isn’t what it should be. The amenities aren’t up to par. The layout isn’t much fun.

But none of those characterizations are true at Anaheim Hills Golf Course, which sports one of the most well-maintained layouts in Orange County and amenities comparable to those of the top daily-fee facilities in all of Southern California.

“There might be courses that are cheaper than us, but I think we are one of the best deals in terms of the quality we offer,” said Michael Lautenbach, golf manager for the City of Anaheim.

The difference starts from the moment you arrive, as a large, modern clubhouse provides a warm welcome. Its cozy confines, which include a restaurant, bar and pristine banquet facilities, are a great place to gather yourself before a round or unwind following the golf.

“Our clubhouse is something people may not expect to find at a public facility,” Lautenbach said.

The par-71 layout is challenging and fun, and it calls for strategy on many shots thanks to narrow passages and elevation changes. For instance, the par-5 first requires you to maneuver your ball away from a stark sycamore tree in the middle of the fairway to have a shot at reaching the green in two.

Club selection is crucial on the sixth and 17th holes, both downhill par 3s where the views are quite memorable. The course’s unique variety of trees — from oaks to sycamores — adds to the experience.
