When Black Gold Golf Club opened nearly 10 years ago, course architect Arthur Hills said the design would rank among some of his most renowned works because of “beauty, challenge and strategic options.”

His words have been prophetic, as the Yorba Linda facility is firmly entrenched as one of the most charismatic high-end, daily-fee venues in Southern California.

Built on an old Shell oil field, Black Gold is on the edge of Orange County next to Chino Hills State Park. Elevation changes create spectacular panoramic views — the 12th tee is the highest point on any county course — while rolling hillsides foster a serene ambiance.

“It’s like you’re leaving the city and enjoying golf as nature intended it,” said Scott Heyn, PGA general manager.

Besides the setting, Black Gold creates a memorable round thanks to an intriguing mix of holes. There are par 4s both long (the 445-yard fifth) and short (the 299-yard second is reachable for long hitters), an eclectic mix of par 3s (Nos. 7 and 8 are a fun back-to-back duo, while No. 16 is a beast at 216 yards from the tips), and an exciting finale — the water-guarded par-5 18th.

Heyn thinks the layout’s most memorable quality is the smooth putting surfaces, which can be challenging for course rookies to gauge. Take heart in this tip — the greens break toward Disneyland.

Also, Black Gold is one of Orange County’s premier tournament venues thanks to a full-service clubhouse and wedding and banquet facilities.
