What's hot in the desert

Newsmakers and great deals throughout the Coachella Valley.

BY CHRISTI WHITTEMOREPublished: February, 2009

The Bob Hope Chrysler Classic has come and gone through the Coachella Valley, but the golf season in the area is still going strong. Conditions remain superb, and affordable rounds of golf are still available at some of the region’s most renowned venues. And now, there’s even a chance to check out one of the most technologically advanced clubfitting systems in the world — Motion Analysis Technology by TaylorMade has opened at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa.

Eagle Falls Golf Course wins
back-to-back awards

For the second year in a row, Eagle Falls Golf Course at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio earned Greenskeeper.org’s Best Value/Worth the Green Fee award for the Palm Springs area.

The website with more than 35,000 members analyzed user-submitted reviews and survey ratings for courses in California, Arizona and Nevada on criteria that included playing conditions, customer service and value. Eagle Falls consistently scored “great” and often received “5 stars” in these categories.

Eagle Falls Golf Course is a picturesque 6,715-yard, par-72 layout designed by Clive Clark.

TaylorMade Performance Labs opens
new facility at Desert Springs resort

Motion Analysis Technology by TaylorMade uses a launch monitor, high-speed video cameras and a computer to capture a golfer’s swing in 3-D animation. The company’s Performance Labs utilize this technology to give golfers a swing analysis and custom-fitting service.

TaylorMade recently opened a site at the Desert Springs JW Marriott Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, where resort guests and local golfers can get every nuance of their swing measured, analyzed and interpreted.

At the end of the session, participants will know what club specifications work best — from driver to putter. They also can test custom-made demo clubs and take delivery of their tailored set in as little as 48 hours. And, each customer receives a CD showing their swings, data and recommendations for future reference.

The service typically costs about $400, although it can run less depending on the location, season and extensiveness of the fitting. To schedule a fitting, call Jennifer at (760) 674-3333. Visit tmplabs.com to learn more.

Century Golf Partners’ clubs offer discounts
to Coachella Valley residents

Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort in Palm Springs and the Golf Club at Terra Lago in Indio offer Coachella Valley residents significant savings on green fees year-round. With a registration fee of $19, valley residents can lock in discount rates at both courses for 12 months.

Ryan McMillan, director of golf operations at Tahquitz Creek, said residents can save $24 per round on the Legend Course and $41 on the Resort Course. At Terra Lago, residents can play the North Course for a $20 savings on weekdays and $30 on weekends, and can save $15 on the South Course on weekdays and $25 on weekends.

At both clubs, residents’ guests pay $20 more than the cardholders for their rounds now through April 2, and $5 more from April 2 through September 30. Resident cardholders also can get discounts on select merchandise in the golf shops.

To apply for a card, Coachella Valley residents must register at either club’s golf shop. Required documentation includes a photo ID and a valid California driver’s license, car registration or utility bill listing the applicant’s local address. Cards — and proof of residency — must be renewed annually.

Classic Club has discounted
green fees for seniors

The Classic Club, built by Arnold Palmer Design and recognized as one of the Coachella Valley’s most luxurious daily-fee courses, has created a seniors discount program.

“It’s our way of thanking our local golfers,” said PGA General Manager Greg Rubino, who added that the package is available to any golfer who is at least 50 years old.

Implemented in late November, the senior rate will be in effect every Sunday through the end of February. For $99 — as compared to the posted $189 rate — golfers receive green fees, a shared golf cart, range balls, yardage book, ball marker, divot repair tool, unlimited bottled water and GPS on the carts.

Golfers interested in the deal can make tee times seven days in advance, 24 hours a day.
