![]() Traditional and tree lined, Dad Miller has been an Orange County favorite for nearly 50 years (PHOTO: Eddie Meeks). If you’ve played more than 30 rounds of golf in your life, I’m pretty sure you’ve heard a course description like that before. Trees, park, classic — sounds familiar, right? Maybe so, but this is one record that sounds just fine when broken. The Anaheim course, which is named after local golf pioneer H.G. “Dad” Miller (who made a hole in one on the par-3 11th hole at the tender age of 92), has been integral to Orange County for almost 50 years. It’s served as a popular gathering spot for Anaheim residents as well as players of all ages and skills from points nearby. What’s also cool about Dad Miller is the level terrain, making the “walk” part of that oft-used phrase truly appropriate (pull carts are available for an additional $5 fee). The course is like a blank canvas in that you can paint your round however you’d like. Interested in pounding driver on many of the short holes to set up as many birdies as possible? Go right ahead. Looking to stay conservative and work on your game from 150 yards and in? No problem, thanks to smooth greens and enough definition around the putting surfaces to create an array of different lies and situations. I stuck to the former strategy and had a great time, even if I didn’t make many birdies. My favorite hole was the par-5 eighth, the layout’s longest at 510 yards. The fairway is guarded by tall trees on each side and anything errant means no easy recovery. The dogleg-right par-4 14th also was a tough driving test. Dad Miller Golf Course: By the Numbers 5,982: Yardage from the tips. There are three sets of tees, with the most forward option measuring 5,191 yards. 71: Par from each set of tees. There are five par-3 holes and four par 5s, and five of those holes run from 7 through 11. 67.8: Course rating from the tips. The most forward ladies tees play to a 69.9 rating. 1: Hole with water. On the 463-yard par-5 15th, a lake guards the right side of the fairway up to the green. 62: Course record. This has been shot twice, once by PGA professional Toby Todd and also by Guy Livesay. 4.5: Miles from Disneyland. The course is located a short distance off of the Brookhurst exit on the 5 freeway. 17: Cost, in dollars, for senior standby rate (ages 62 and up). Rate is for walking and available any time. |
