Hemet Golf Club

Formerly Landmark at Hemet Golf Club, the facility will be known as Hemet Golf Club at the start of 2010. New superintendent Paul Mayes and his staff improved the aesthetics and conditioning of the course, and Ryan Martin, the new PGA general manager and head professional, has made it a point to improve the overall quality of the experience. “We’re focused on making sure our product is consistent for our customers,” said Martin, a Southland native who previously worked at Sandpiper and Glen Annie golf clubs in the Santa Barbara area. Ashwood Golf Course

Ashwood features 27 holes and a practice facility with grass hitting stations available year-round. The high desert course is managed by Billy Casper Golf and frequently offers green fee specials on its website. Log on regularly to see what’s available.


CrossCreek Golf Club

CrossCreek offers a secluded experience for players despite being just 10 minutes from the freeway. The Arthur Hills design has garnered national acclaim since opening in 2001, as it draws upon influences from architects such as George Thomas and Alister MacKenzie. CrossCreek’s regular rates are $55 on weekdays and $65 on weekends, with fees dropping to $35 and $50, respectively, after noon, and $25 and $35 after 2 p.m., with cart included.


Diamond Valley Golf Club

One of the earliest staples of the Inland Empire golf landscape, the 300-acre Temecula Creek Inn features three nine-hole layouts, a quaint hotel and access to many attractions in the Temecula Valley. From December 1-23, guests staying at the Holiday Neighbor rate of $99 have access to 18 holes of golf at twilight rates ($32 Monday-Thursday, $36 Friday, $45 weekends and holidays). El Rancho Verde’s fun layout makes birdies possible for players of all skill levels. This winter, the course again has its popular Sundowner rate — beginning at 2 p.m., play for $15 on weekdays and $20 on weekends (cart included). Also, El Rancho Verde continues to offer three tiers of unlimited monthly golf memberships, which are valid 30 days from the date of purchase. A weekday walking pass is $120, a weekday pass with cart is $189, and the anytime pass with cart is $259.

Journey at Pechanga

Journey at Pechanga has developed beautifully since opening in August 2008, with lush conditions and smooth greens all year round. For winter, the facility moved the time for twilight rates to 12 p.m., with regular green fees at a 50 percent discount. With a double green and burns that meanders through many holes, the Links at Summerly has become a local favorite since opening in 2008. That popularity could grow with the introduction of annual memberships, with golfers having the option of paying by the month or pre-paying for a year at a discount. Oak Valley hosted the second stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School last month, and Southern Californian Brendan Steele shared medalist honors with Jeff Brehaut. The tour-level conditions figure to persist through the winter, and with the new year coming the facility is again offering its Loyalty Club membership program. Mark your calendars, because Menifee Lakes is offering $21 green fees on the 21st of every month (cart included) after 10 a.m. The 36-hole facility just celebrated its 20th anniversary, so the promotion is to honor the jump into Year 21 in 2010. The course has received a number of accolades since opening in 2000, including being rated the third-best course in the state and No. 26 in the country by Golflink.com in 2008.


Upland Hills Country Club

If you prefer a shorter course that requires precision off the tee and on approach shots, Upland Hills Country Club is for you. A recent renovation boosted yardage to 6,005 from the back tees, and the sloping greens offer a stern test for all players. The Men’s Club at Upland Hills costs $80 to join and includes a free round of golf, sleeve of balls, the ability to make advance tee times and more.

The course at Jurupa Hills is a tree-lined William F. Bell design that features kikuyu fairways and smooth greens. The layout is not overly penal, but plenty of tall trees line the fairways. Jurupa Hills features some of the most affordable standard green fees in the Inland Empire.

One of only a few Arnold Palmer designs open to the public in Southern California, Empire Lakes is a memorable layout with some of the region’s most scenic holes, including the risk-reward par-5 18th. Los Serranos Country Club

Los Serranos features two 18-hole layouts, including the South Course, with tees that can stretch all the way to 7,628 yards. Shandin Hills Golf Club

Shandin Hills has been an Inland Empire staple for 25 years. The course is a Cary Bickler design with fairways dotted by eucalyptus, pine and palm trees, and a subtle amount of elevation changes make it a treat to walk. Managed by Eagle Golf, Shandin Hills currently has two weekday specials — green fees on Mondays are $20 with cart (“Monday Madness”), and Thursday rates of $24 include cart and choice of a hot dog or deli sandwich  (“Thumpin’ Thursdays”). Also, the course offers a $10 green fee for men and women in uniform (military, police, fire, etc.).


Sierra La Verne Country Club

Two distinct nines define Sierra La Verne, one of the most affordable non-equity private clubs in the region. The front nine winds through an old orange grove in the hills, and the back nine is set amidst a canyon. The facility’s clubhouse has two remodeled banquet areas and a garden gazebo. With elevation changes, a peaceful and challenging layout and an ornate clubhouse, Eagle Glen offers a convenient escape for Southland golfers. From the par-4 first, which drops from the tee and doglegs to the right, to the 18th, a par 5 with a lake affecting tee shots and approaches, a round at Eagle Glen is a relaxing way to test your skills.



General Old Golf Course

Formerly a military-only course, General Old has been open to the public for almost 13 years. The traditional-style course features narrow, tree-lined fairways and well-manicured greens. On Saturday, December 12, the course will hold a demo day with top manufacturers such as Callaway and Titleist. Plus, in 2010, the facility anticipates beginning work on a new clubhouse that will coincide with the addition of a full liquor license. Indian Hills is a par-70 layout suitable for golfers of all skills. It plays just over 6,100 yards from the tips, and there are many holes where it’s prudent to leave driver in the bag. Elevation changes also add to the importance of club selection. Indian Hills offers two clubs for golfers — one is a traditional men’s club, and the other is the Bow and Arrow club, which is open to men and women of all ages.
