The Golf Club of California, which is now open for limited public play, offers visitors an experience usually reserved for private club members. In 2009, The Golf Club of California hosted many prominent events, including the San Diego County Amateur Championship. Meadow Lake Golf Club

Meadow Lake is one of the most scenic and affordable courses in northern San Diego County, and it is unveiling an intriguing renovation in 2010. The 17th hole has been changed from a par 4 to a par 5. And in January, golfers can save money, too, as the course is offering a special between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday through Friday. Golfers can play 18 holes with cart and lunch for only $30. (Must mention Southland Golf for this discount.) Golfers can also take advantage of one of the instruction specials at Meadow Lake. Mt. Woodson Golf Club

Pala Mesa continues to be one of the most scenic and affordable golf destinations in San Diego County. The course offers an array of discounted green fees, including a military rate and a super twilight option. Pala Mesa also has discounted rates for parties booking a tournament of 16 or more with extra benefits included. Throughout the year, Pala Mesa stages instruction clinics for men, women and juniors. Salt Creek Golf Club

Incorporating a blend of traditional links elements with modern characteristics, Salt Creek sports one of the most eclectic layouts in San Diego County. For 2010, the club has unveiled one-hour golf clinics every Saturday morning. The group classes begin on the hour at 8, 9, 10 and 11 a.m. and cost $10 per person. Salt Creek also has established a walking club — for one weekday a week, people will meet on the first tee at sunrise and walk the peaceful and scenic course. Also, on Feb. 28, the course is hosting a throwback event with Pro Kids Golf Academy, and players will be using, among other things, wooden-shafted clubs.

Located in the Rancho San Diego area only 20 minutes from Downtown, Steele Canyon is currently undergoing a renovation of its clubhouse and banquet area. Upon completion, the facility will be able to accommodate dinners and weddings for over 350 people. This April, Steele Canyon will host the 2010 Gary Player Invitational, a pro-am tournament featuring tour professionals, celebrities and some of the area’s top business people.
