![]() The course used to be public, operating under former names The Meadows Del Mar and Del Mar National, but was converted into a private club in July 2006. It is also accessible to resort guests. "The goal is to make this the premier golf facility in Southern California," said director of golf Shawn Cox. The par-72, 7,160-yard layout, nestled in the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, is mostly the same as when it opened in 1999. Notable aesthetic changes include a 15-foot waterfall next to the 18th green and new pine trees. A new type of bunker sand is being used, giving the traps a whiter appearance and providing better overall playability. The sand traps also were reinforced with bunker lining, a technology that prevents impediments like rocks from mixing with the sand. Five sets of tees accommodate golfers of all skill levels, and those who play from the tips can expect one of the better challenges in the Southland. "It's a fun golf course to play because all the trouble off the tee is geared to what tee you play," Cox said. "The bunkers are put in an optimal place." One of the toughest and most memorable tests is the par-3 17th hole, which sports an intimidating pond and plays 242 yards from the tips. "It's probably the most beautiful par 3 in San Diego," Cox said. Resort guests can play The Grand Golf Club for $230 Monday-Thursday and $250 Friday-Sunday.
