Hot on its Heels

Aliante has quickly become a Las Vegas favorite, and Coyote Springs is poised to earn similar praise.

By Marcello AraujoPublished: April, 2008

When Aliante Golf Club opened in December 2003, it didn't take much time for the property to be recognized as one of the best in the Las Vegas area.

Coyote Springs, which debuts this month, is one of the region's most hyped course openings in recent memory. Part of the new Jack Nicklaus-designed Bear Trail, the property is sure to find favor among tourists and residents alike.

Aliante Golf Club
Location: 17 miles northwest of the Las Vegas Strip
Vitals: Designed by Gray Panks and Associates; opened in December 2003. The course has four sets of tees, ranging from 5,430 yards to 7,022 yards.
Layout: Two water features and contoured fairways with generous landing areas highlight the course. Another prominent element is arroyos that come into play on 14 of the 18 holes. Each tee box is slightly elevated, which makes every hole and hazard appear shorter than expected. The greens are undulated, so landing your ball on the correct portion of the putting surface is key.
Enjoyment factor: The course is fair, challenging and fun to play. Many tee shots require better players to think about club selection, and hitting a fairway metal or hybrid is sometimes better than a driver. The novice golfer will love Aliante's setting, making return trips a definite possibility.
Quotable: "The agronomic standards and layout at Aliante Golf Club give players an inspiring experience when they play the course." - Director of sales Kris Strauss.
Local knowledge: Aliante is home to the Medicus Golf Institute, which offers full-day golf schools that focus on the short game, full swing, power and scoring.
Rates: $70 to $120 during the week; $80 to $140 on weekends. Twilight and super twilight rates also available. For more information, call (702) 399-4888 or visit aliantegolf.com.

Coyote Springs
Location: 50 miles northeast of the Las Vegas Strip
Vitals: The Chase Course at Coyote Springs is the first track to be built on the Jack Nicklaus-designed Bear Trail. There are four sets of tees, ranging from 5,349 yards to 7,471 yards.
Layout: The Chase Course is a par-72, 7,471-yard layout with a demanding 75.8 rating and 141 slope from the back tees. Eleven lakes come into play, and the course is already considered to be one of Nicklaus's finest desert creations.
Enjoyment factor: The rye grass fairways are set against a desert backdrop, and mountain vistas in every direction give a valley oasis feel to the property. The greens feature plenty of movement and plateaus that are ripe for strategic pin placements. It's best to aim away from the deep white-sand bunkers protecting them.
Quotable: "The courses we are now planning for Coyote Springs will use and enhance this rare landscape to offer players of every skill level a golf experience which is enjoyable, challenging and memorable." - Course designer Jack Nicklaus.
Local knowledge: Coyote Springs will be home to a PGA Village, which will include a PGA Historical Center and a PGA Learning Center that will open in late 2009. Golfers can learn about the history of the game and seek the expertise of PGA professionals. The second course at Coyote Springs, which is yet to be named and will be designed by Nicklaus and Pete Dye, is scheduled to be completed in 2010.
Rates: When Coyote Springs opens on April 25, green fees will be $195. They'll drop to $145 on June 10 and remain that way until August 31. For more information, call (800) 944-1594 or visit
