![]() Corona’s Mountain View Country Club closed in January. Quail Ranch shut down last December and Mountain View followed in January. The Inland Empire golf market also has seen several course transactions in the past several months, including The Champions Club at The Retreat Golf Club in Corona, CrossCreek Golf Course in Temecula and Trilogy at Glen Ivy near Corona. In addition to slowing sales, course operators are anticipating a pinch from the green fees tax proposed by Gov. Schwarzenegger to help make up California’s $40 billion budget shortfall. Designed by Desmond Muirhead, Quail Ranch challenged golfers with elevation changes and undulating greens. Muirhead also designed the nearby Country Club at Soboba Springs, which opened in 1966. In contrast to the struggles of many of its neighbors, Soboba is enjoying an upward trajectory. This fall, the San Jacinto course will serve as host to a Nationwide Tour event featuring a $1 million purse. “We’ve seen some people wander through and mentioned it (Quail Ranch’s closure),” Soboba PGA Head Golf Professional Tyler Miller said. Nevertheless, Soboba plans to keep to its “game plan” of offering a “high-quality product with high-quality service.” “We feel our rates are fair for what we provide,” Miller said. Who designed Mountain View is anybody’s guess, and the property’s future appears in limbo, as both the city of Corona and Riverside County nixed housing developments over the years (the course is on both city and county land). |
