![]() Like other holes at Indian Hills, the par-5 18th features a difficult two-tiered green (PHOTO: Eddie Meeks) In an era where length and challenge are two of the more prominent traits among newer layouts, many golfers rightfully long for tracks that can be classified as “fun little courses.” Indian Hills Golf Club is such a course. It has undergone alterations from the initial vision of architects Harold Heers and Jimmy Powell, but its character remains largely unaltered — there is a focus on strategy from tee to green, and on the undulating greens, anything that’s a two-putt or better is solid. Because of its length, the par-70 layout is suitable for golfers of all skills. It plays just over 6,100 yards from the tips, and there are many holes where it’s most prudent to leave driver in the bag — short par 4s like the second and 12th are certainly reachable for longer hitters, but any tee shots less than precise could face difficult roads for par. Elevation changes add to the importance of club selection. “Don’t be fooled by the shortness of the course, it’s still very challenging,” said Ed Harmon, who has been the facility’s general manager for three years. Conveniently located in Riverside just southeast of the intersection of the 15 and 60 freeways, Indian Hills is a quaint retreat that features spectacular views of the city. There are no parallel fairways, adding to the peacefulness of a round. What has kept Indian Hills a staple of the Inland Empire is value (no green fees over $50), and superb conditioning, as both the greens and short grass can often be found in great shape.
