The course gracefully winds through the Temecula Valley and features some breathtaking elevation changes — including a 175-foot drop on the par-4 sixth. What’s hot: Journey at Pechanga is offering a special early twilight rate in which golfers can play the course on weekdays after 11 a.m. for $75 (cart included, promotion ends September 23). Plus, the facility has launched a series of events called Wine on the Range, where guests can pay a $10 cover charge to sample local wines with appetizers and practice on the driving range while mingling and networking with others. With traditional links elements such as square tees, fescue grass, a double green and a tricky burn that runs throughout the course, the layout is sure to bring out your inner Tom Watson. What’s hot: The club’s $40 (cart included) weekday green fee has been extended through the end of August, and Summerly also is starting men’s and women’s clubs as well as a couples league. Empire Lakes Golf Course (909) 481-6663 • empirelakes.com Why you’ll like it: Both novice and seasoned golfers will enjoy Rancho Cucamonga’s Empire Lakes, which features the sporty design touches of Arnold Palmer and the cache from having once hosted a Nationwide Tour event. As one of the premier names in the high-end, daily-fee landscape of Southern California, it’s also one of the most affordable, with green fees of $60 during peak times Monday through Thursday. Mid-day, twilight, nine-hole, junior and senior rates also are available. What’s hot: Visit the Empire Lakes website and sign up for the e-mail database to find out about monthly specials, including 2-for-1 green fee offers. The 36-hole Chino Hills facility has the North Course, designed to be playable for golfers of all skills, and the South Course, which has the famous “Jack’s Black” tees that can stretch the layout to more than 7,500 yards. What’s hot: Los Serranos recently unveiled Club 55, where players 55 years of age or older can pay a one-time membership fee of $25 and receive $30 green fees Monday through Friday and $50 rates on Saturdays and Sundays after 10 a.m. (good for the remainder of 2009). Management remains the same, and everything about the scenic venue remains intact. Glen Ivy has a mix of holes that call for precision and power. The par-4 18th, with a substantial elevation drop from tee to fairway, is one of the most memorable holes in the Inland Empire. What’s hot: The Golf Club at Glen Ivy will launch a new website in the near future. When the site is running, it will offer a chance to sign up for an e-mail special database. Ashwood Golf Course (760) 240-1800 • ashwoodgolf.com Why you’ll like it: Apple Valley’s Ashwood Golf Course features three distinct nine-hole layouts with 15 par 4s, 11 par 3s and one par 5. Ashwood also has one of the most comprehensive practice facilities in the Inland Empire, with a year-round grass driving range and greens for working on putting, chipping and bunker shots. What’s hot: This month, the course is offering a green fee special of $21 on weekdays and $29 on weekends. The club’s Player Development program, at $29 a month with a minimum one-year commitment, allows members to hit unlimited range balls and play 18 holes for $12 during seasonal twilight times. (Membership in the program is non-transferrable.) ![]() Diamond Valley Golf Club (951) 767-0828 Why you’ll like it: Hemet’s Diamond Valley, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, is a great test for golfers of all skills, with plenty of length to challenge better players and enough short tee options to keep beginners coming back. What’s hot: Diamond Valley has been offering monthly specials all summer, and the course has another promotion for August — regular weekday green fees before 12:30 p.m. are $36 and $33 for seniors, while twilight rates between 12:30 and 3 p.m. are $27 for everyone and super twilight rates after 3 p.m. are $20. Oak Valley Golf Club (951) 769-7200 • oakvalleygolf.com Why you’ll like it: Whether you’re a beginner or an aspiring professional, Beaumont’s Oak Valley is one of the most revered facilities in Southern California. The property features a Schmidt-Curley design that serves as a second-stage site for PGA Tour Qualifying School, and it also has an expansive driving range and the Oak Valley Golf Academy. What’s hot: Call the pro shop to find out about any green fee specials being offered. Oak Valley will host the second stage of Qualifying School from November 18-21. Hidden Valley Golf Club (951) 737-1010 • hiddenvalleygolf.com Why you’ll like it: Designed by Casey O’Callaghan, Hidden Valley utilizes sloping terrain and incredible views to enhance the playing experience. The course has a great mix of short and long par 3s as well as par 4s that are risk-reward and lengthy, and the clubhouse features popular golf course and hearty Italian cuisine provided by Villa Amalfi Ristorante. What’s hot: Hidden Valley has a new fleet of golf carts featuring GPS. The course also continues to promote a trio of 50-minute golf clinics held every Saturday at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. The clinics are $10 per player and include unlimited range balls. The theme of each session varies according to the needs of participants. ![]() Claremont Golf Course (909) 624-2748 • claremontgolf.com Why you’ll like it: Executive tests don’t get much more scenic than Claremont Golf Course, which is surrounded by the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden and offers views of picturesque Mt. Baldy. The nine-hole layout is ideal for those learning the game, but also can test more experienced players. Plus, it’s convenient to Los Angeles and Orange counties as well as major points of the Inland Empire. What’s hot: No green fee at Claremont costs more than $20 — an 18-hole weekend rate is $19, and a nine-hole rate on weekdays is $13. Visit the course’s website to find a coupon for buying one green fee and getting half off your partner’s green fee. Simply print the coupon, fill it out and bring it to the course. Yucaipa Valley Golf Club (909) 790-6522 • yvgc.com Why you’ll like it: Yucaipa Valley is a fantastic course to play in the summer. The layout’s firm fairways allow for longer shots, especially off the tee, and many holes force players to think about ball placement and approach shots. The undulating greens are always a test at Yucaipa, and the elevation changes and sloping fairways are sure to add challenge. What’s hot: Throughout August, Yucaipa Valley will have something for everyone, including a $35 online special that offers golf, cart with GPS, lunch and a sleeve of golf balls. Plus, the course has a $39 weekend special that includes a cart, and a $26 weekday senior special with a cart. Call the pro shop for more specials. Upland Hills Country Club (909) 946-4711 • golfuplandhills.com Why you’ll like it: If you prefer a shorter course that requires precision off the tee and on approach shots, then Upland Hills Country Club is for you. A recent renovation boosted yardage to 6,005 from the back tees, and the sloping greens offer a stern test for all players. What’s hot: The course has a summer special that offers golf (with cart) and lunch for groups of four or more. On Monday through Thursday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., it’s $35 per player, with the price dropping to $25 after 1 p.m. The price on Friday is $40 and $25, respectively, with weekend rates at $50 and $35. CrossCreek Golf Club (800) 818-4399 • crosscreekgolfclub.com Why you’ll like it: Temecula’s CrossCreek offers golfers a tranquil, rustic setting while still being located near Orange and San Diego counties. The Arthur Hills design offers a bit of challenge but is generally fair and enjoyable. What’s hot: If you’ve never been to CrossCreek, check it out this month since there are a lot of specials available. First, for every $50 spent on merchandise in the pro shop, a player will receive a certificate for a free round of golf valid at least one day after purchase. There’s an abundance of sale items in the shop, including golf shirts that start at $29 and shoes starting at $49. August green fees are $49 on weekdays and $69 on weekends, while seniors can play for $39 Monday through Thursday. Weekday play after 3 p.m. is $20. El Rancho Verde Golf Club (909) 875-5346 • pacificgolfenterprises.com Why you’ll like it: Rialto’s El Rancho Verde is one of the most player-friendly layouts in the Southland, as any green hit in regulation offers a legitimate chance at birdie. The Harry Rainville design plays 7,023 yards from the tips, but four additional sets of tees makes the course a great track for players of all ages and skill levels. What’s hot: The course is offering a 30-day pass for $189 that allows golfers to play anytime on weekdays for 30 days past the purchase date. A similar offer for $259 is good for all seven days of the week. Both passes include cart fees. Redhawk Golf Club (951) 302-3850 • redhawkgolfcourse.com Why you’ll like it: Temecula’s Redhawk Golf Club has one of the most natural layouts in the Southland. The layout — designed by Ron Fream — melds so subtly with the terrain and environmental preserves that it’s easy to forget you’re on a golf course. That is, until you visit one of their challenging greenside bunkers. After your round, visit Rico’s Cantina to sample area wines. What’s hot: Redhawk’s eClub offers online specials. By signing up, golfers can receive early notification on future promotions and receive a free round of golf on their birthday. Check out the website for more information. Menifee Lakes Country Club (951) 672-4824 • menifee-lakes.com Why you’ll like it: Featuring two tracks designed by Ted Robinson Sr., Menifee Lakes Country Club is “fun and entertaining to play,” said General Manager Tom Powers. Robinson’s tiered, quick greens are a highlight of both courses. Beware the 10th hole on the Lakes course and its hidden water hazard, and also watch out for the lake in front of the green on the reachable par-5 16th on the Palms. What’s hot: In honor of its 20th anniversary, Menifee Lakes is offering many promotions throughout the remainder of the year. A glow ball tournament on August 21 precedes an anniversary celebration on August 24 that includes putting contests, food and a demo day featuring Callaway, Ping and TaylorMade. Plus, on the 20th of every month, green fees are $20 after 10 a.m., cart included. Indian Hills Golf Club (951) 360-2090 • indianhillsgolf.com Why you’ll like it: What the 6,104-yard layout at Riverside’s Indian Hills Golf Club lacks in distance it makes up for in narrow fairways and elevation changes. The par-4 16th features one of the best views from the tee box on any hole in the Inland Empire. Plus, the welcoming lounge has a great atmosphere for unwinding after your round. What’s hot: Southland Golf readers can get 2-for-1 weekday rates in August. The banquet facilities are superb and a wonderful place to host weddings and receptions. There are multiple menus to choose from and six wedding packages. ![]() Landmark at Hemet Golf Club (951) 926-4653 • hemetgolfclub.com Why you’ll like it: With the natural beauty of the Hemet Valley providing a breathtaking backdrop, Landmark at Hemet Golf Club features an 18-hole layout crafted by architects Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley. What’s hot: The course is offering a range of promotions this month. A 2-for-1 green fee special is available Monday through Friday after 10 a.m. for $55, and on Saturday and Sunday after 10 a.m. for $65. There’s also a 36-hole special Monday through Thursday, where the first round is $39 and the second round is free; do the same thing over the weekend and the first round is $59.
