Familiarity, courtesy and loyalty are key elements in the success of Riverside’s Jurupa Hills Country Club.

“Family-run operations are becoming rarer and rarer, and I think that’s been one of the highlights at Jurupa Hills,” said PGA member Ron Robinson, the course’s former owner who is now tournament director and a consultant. “I think we have a marvelous reputation.”

Robinson’s father, Joe, developed the property and served as GM when it opened in 1960. Ron followed in that capacity, and the third operator was Jason Taylor, Ron’s son.

A difficult economy forced the Robinsons to cede control of Jurupa Hills to the Cox family late last year, but new owner Chuck Cox kept Ron Robinson on-board.

“Even with the change, it’s still another family running the business,” Robinson said of the Coxes, who also co-own Indian Hills Golf Club and Van Buren Golf Center in Riverside. Chuck’s daughter, Karen Vlahos, is the new GM at Jurupa Hills.

Added Robinson: “Almost all of the employees we’ve had over the years are still here. That says a lot.”

In a short time, Jurupa Hills’ new owners have breathed new life into the property. The tree-lined William F. Bell-designed course features kikuyu fairways and smooth greens, and a quaint gazebo and two practice putting greens have been built next to the driving range.

The layout is not overly penal, but plenty of tall trees line the fairways — so golfers who spray the ball off the tee could encounter their share of trouble.

Green fees don’t exceed $33, and discounts for seniors and juniors add to the venue’s reputation for putting family first.
