![]() The Feel When Landmark at Hemet Golf Club opened in 2003, it had the feel of a softer version of the company's courses in the Palm Springs area. The Schmidt-Curley layout in Hemet is sporty and not lengthy, at just over 6,200 yards from the blue tees. With contouring holes and water hazards used for aesthetics and punishment, there is enough character to make you want to play the course again. The Amenities The clubhouse is a large room, allowing you to see from one end to the other. While you check in at the golf shop, you can make sure your friend is ordering the hot dog you asked him to order. The restaurant offers typical golf course items, including a club sandwich so massive it has to be dismantled to be eaten. There's a large practice green behind the clubhouse and an all-grass range. The Conditions From the time you put a tee in the ground on the opening par 5, it becomes apparent that you need to keep your ball in the fairway. It appears that most of the maintenance work has focused on the tee boxes, fairways and greens. This has left the rough gnarly, patchy and long in areas, and small search parties had to be formed to look for several errant shots. Bunkers should also be avoided at all costs. The oven-baked sand is crusty in most of the traps, and the waste bunker left of the 12th green has become a combination of native grasses and collected water. The greenside bunkers on the 16th hole had fresh, soft sand, so maybe refurbishment work is under way. The greens are all subtle in size and shape. The grass is kept longer in the summer to withstand the heat, but the putting surfaces remain relatively smooth and are soft enough to hold approach shots. Local Knowledge Familiarity comes in handy at the 366-yard, par-4 fourth hole. It's a dogleg left with a marsh hidden from view that might collect balls hit through the fairway, and out of bounds guards the left side of the hole. It's deceiving, but a 240-yard shot aimed at the tallest rock in the distance will carry the trouble and lead to a short-iron approach shot. A little extra knowledge is needed at the 343-yard, par-4 16th hole, which bends hard to the right. Long and left brings rocks into play and the right side is out of bounds and completely unforgiving. Play a 200-yard shot to the middle of the fairway and move on. The Post-Game Show Landmark at Hemet isn't going to win any beauty contests, but under the blemishes is a decent golf course. It won't beat you up, and there are several exciting holes that will have you feeling good and scoring well if you hit the ball decently during the round. Summer green fees are $35 during the week and $49 on weekends. The $29 weekend super twilight rate after 1 p.m. is hard to pass up and definitely makes this course worth a look.
