North Star: Los Serranos

With its latest improvements and renovations, Los Serranos now features two top-notch golf courses.

By GREG FLORESPublished: June, 2006

Golfers and nomads have a lot in common. Both enjoy changes in scenery and meeting challenges along the way. Our golfing nomad travels the Southland each month in search of great golf experiences.

It’s tough to live in the shadow of a more popular sibling. It’s even more difficult when that sibling is blessed with traditional good looks and an athletic build. Such is life for the North Course at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills.

For years, the South Course has gathered all the headlines, mostly on the strength of its six par-5s and the 7,521-yard Jack’s Blacks tees that make it the longest course in Southern California.

The Kramer family that has owned the course since 1961 hasn’t neglected the North Course, however, and $450,000 worth of renovations have improved the character of the course.

Former PGA Tour winner and Ryder Cup member Johnny Pott was enlisted to oversee the makeover, and the addition of bunkers and other improvements have reshaped the old layout and enhanced its classic style.

THE AMENITIES: The Kramers and many of their longtime employees bring a family feel to the golf course. General manager David Kramer has an affinity for nostalgia, and you’ll find pictures of golf greats next to pictures of his father, tennis champion and course owner Jack Kramer, on the wall. A signpost near the putting green will also tell you the exact mileage to Augusta National and other significant golf destinations.

THE COURSE: The North is nowhere near as long or demanding as the South, but the recent improvements have added definition and flow to the course. On this day, we played the blue tees, which top out at 6,385 yards. Some courses are just fun to play and this one falls into that category. Holes that had previously lacked depth, or were just plain ordinary, now flow nicely around fairway bunkers. The course also has been strengthened with new tee boxes.

WHAT’S NEW: Take note of the grass tennis court that David Kramer built alongside the first fairway to honor the career of his father. The court is available for use by invitation only.

The first noticeable change to the North Course is at the third hole, where the fairway narrows and bunkers line each side of the fairway.

The highlight of the renovations is at the 16th hole. It’s not an exceptionally long par-5 at 537 yards from the blue tees, but three steep sod-wall bunkers next to the green can wreak havoc on players who choose to challenge them.

LOCATION AND RATES: Los Serranos Country Club is at 15656 Yorba Ave., Chino Hills. Rates for the North Course are $45-$65. Call (909) 597-1711 or visit www.losserranoscountryclub.com. n
