![]() The par-3 17th hole at Newport Beach Country Club is one of the course's most famous tests. The facility hosted an 18-hole local qualifier for the U.S. Open on May 13, with a select group of the region’s touring pros and amateurs making it to sectional qualifying. “It’s a feather in our cap to be able to have a prestigious event like this and be a part of the national championship,” said Perry Dickey, president and COO of the club. “We want to give back to golf.” As is normally the case during the Toshiba Classic, the course yielded a few low scores during local qualifying but presented a challenge for most thanks to nettlesome trees lining the fairways and greens that are slick and sometimes difficult to read. Justin Boatman of Ladera Ranch and amateur Dan Sullivan of Pasadena shared medalist honors at 4-under-par 67, while Riverside’s Ian Hjulberg and Huntington Beach’s Dan Kupfer each finished a stroke back with 68s. There was a dramatic end to the day, when Mark Warman (San Clemente), Tom Kanazawa (Gardena) and amateur David Lyons (Huntington Beach) battled for two qualifying spots in a playoff. All three parred the first extra hole — the par-4 16th — before heading to the par-3 17th, where Warman made a 30-footer for birdie to grab the first spot, while Kanazawa made a par to best Lyons, who made bogey.
