Talega Golf Club | Take a video tour
(949) 369-6226 • talegagolfclub.com
Why you’ll like it: One of Orange County’s most luxurious daily-fee facilities has been thriving under new ownership and management. San Clemente’s Talega still features the same scenic, well-conditioned layout and ornate clubhouse, but the new rate card and array of promotions has created a lot of buzz for locals and tourists.

What’s hot: Green fees at Talega have been lowered significantly. Non-residents can play for $80 Monday-Thursday, $90 on Friday and $100 on weekends and holidays. Plus, there’s now a resident green fee, which is $70, $80 and $90, respectively. Patrons also can save by taking advantage of senior, junior and nine-hole rates.

The Signature Grille, in addition to serving breakfast and lunch seven days a week, offers Friday night dinners and a brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday. The brunch, which is $16.95 per person ($5.95 for children) features live music, carved baron of beef, a Bloody Mary bar and $8 bottomless champagne. There’s also a happy hour from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with $1 appetizers, $2 draft beers and $3 well drinks.

Alta Vista Country Club
(714) 524-1591 • altavistacc.com
Why you’ll like it: Placentia’s Alta Vista is one of the top private options in Orange County, with a tree-lined layout designed by David Rainville and a relaxing clubhouse still basking in the upgrades of a $3 million renovation. The restaurant in the clubhouse is run by chef Hernani Fabros, who previously worked at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. The facility also is an ideal venue for public tournaments and group outings, which are available to book every Monday.

What’s hot: Tournament and group dates for 2010 are filling up fast, so contact the course to learn more. Book any group with at least 100 players for 2010 and receive a bonus prize package, including four complimentary hole-in-one contests featuring an array of prizes, including trips to Hawaii, golf equipment gift cards and more. Group rates start at $77 per person.

Anaheim Hills and Dad Miller Golf Courses | Take a video tour of Anaheim Hills
Anaheim Hills: (714) 998-3041
Dad Miller: (714) 765-3481
playanaheimgolf.com
Why you’ll like it: Few municipal venues offer more value than Anaheim Hills, which has a fun layout that keeps players on their toes and a clubhouse that’s both a relaxing haven for golfers and a superb venue for special events.

Dad Miller, also in Anaheim, is one of the top walking venues in Orange County and was the high school home course for Cypress native Tiger Woods, who opened his first learning center at the site.

What’s hot: From now through September at Anaheim Hills, book a group of 16 or more players after noon and receive reduced rates. To learn more, contact Bob Johns at (714) 921-9182.

Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club
(949) 305-5100 • arroyotrabuco.com
Why you’ll like it: Nestled in the hills of the Ladera Open Space Reserve in Mission Viejo, Arroyo Trabuco offers a tranquil golf getaway just a few minutes from the 5 freeway. The layout features challenging par-4 holes and scenic par 3s, including the picturesque 13th, which plays over a lake. Another pleasing hole is the par-5 18th, which recently underwent a minor renovation to level the fairway, rebuild the lake shoreline and add fairway bunkers (pictured).

What’s hot: To celebrate its fifth anniversary, Arroyo Trabuco has introduced the Member’s Club, which provides discounted green fees, a $50 range card, free birthday golf, loyalty points and more. Call the pro shop for more information.

O’Neill’s Bar and Grill, which has one of the most eclectic golf course menus in the area, now has a tapas menu with tasty international options paired with a variety of wine flights.

Birch Hills Golf Course
(714) 990-0201 • birchhillsgolf.com
Why you’ll like it: Featuring a quintet of par 4s and 13 par 3s, the Brea layout is in superb shape and has championship and regular tee options, so more experienced players can test themselves. In particular, the back nine has four par-3 holes that play over 160 yards, including the 16th, which stretches to 184 yards. Birch Hills is managed by Billy Casper Golf and is conveniently located off the 57 freeway, just down the street from Brea Mall.

What’s hot: All summer long, Birch Hills is holding weekly junior camps. The standard cost per child is $199, but discounts are available for juniors who attend more than one week and families who have multiple campers. Three session types are available — ages 8-17, ages 13-17 and girls only. The course also is holding Family Golf and Dinner camps, a three-night series of fun, food and golf instruction. Call Rick Serling at (714) 809-2930 for more information.

Birch Hills also has glow ball tournaments scheduled at the end of July and August. Call the pro shop to learn more.

Meadowlark Golf Club
(714) 846-1364 • meadowlarkgc.com
Why you’ll like it: One of Orange County’s oldest and most convenient venues, Huntington Beach’s Meadowlark is easily accessible to both the coast and the 405 freeway. The par-70 layout isn’t long (5,568 yards), but what it lacks in length it makes up for with water hazards and dome-like greens.

What’s hot: Meadowlark is offering the Player Performance Program, where for $55 a month, players can hit unlimited range balls, have access to twilight and super twilight times an hour early (2 p.m. and 4 p.m.) and attend weekly instruction clinics for free. This summer, the course also has full- and half-day junior camps, which include a free Nike hat and golf shirt for all campers.

In addition, whether you’re purchasing clubs, balls, hats or apparel, Meadowlark has pledged to beat the price of any competitor offering the same product. Call or visit the pro shop to learn more.

Monarch Beach Golf Links | Take a video tour
(949) 240-8247 • monarchbeachgolf.com
Why you’ll like it: When it comes to oceanfront scenery, few Southern California courses stack up to Monarch Beach. Located in Dana Point, the par-70 layout features a memorable pair of holes — the right-side fairway rough on the short par-4 third stops at the sand of the beach, while the elevated tee of the par-3 fourth allows golfers to get a breathtaking view of the coast. The golf shop features a selection of equipment and high-end apparel, while the St. Regis Monarch Beach offers elegant cuisine on a patio overlooking the course.

What’s hot: Before each round, players are given a card with a three-digit code, which can be entered into a camera station on the fourth tee box that automatically snaps three photographs of your group with the ocean in the background. At the end of the round, visit the pro shop and determine if you’d like to purchase the photos as hard copies or files via e-mail (no obligation). The first hard copy is $14.95; two or more are $9.95 each; and a file transferrable via e-mail is $15.95.

San Clemente Golf Course | Take a video tour
(949) 361-8384 • sanclementegc.com
Why you’ll like it: San Clemente is one of Orange County’s most quaint municipal layouts. Located about a mile from the ocean, the course features holes with elevation changes and breathtaking scenery.

“It’s a course you can play almost every day and never get tired of,” said PGA professional David Cook.

In particular, the downhill par-3 15th, framed by palm trees and a community hillside, is an unforgettable test. What has enhanced the property even more is a renovated clubhouse, which features a new pro shop, snack bar and the delicious fare of Irons in the Fire restaurant.

What’s hot: San Clemente recently unveiled a website where visitors can sign up for an e-Club with a monthly prize drawing and online specials. The site also has a new tee time service, allowing visitors to book unused starting times.

This summer, San Clemente and professional Rocky Rafkin are offering a number of junior clinics and mini-camps. Call the pro shop to learn more.

San Juan Hills Golf Club
(949) 493-1167 • sanjuanhillsgolf.com
Why you’ll like it: A favorite daily-fee facility and tournament venue for more than 30 years, San Juan Hills prides itself as one of Orange County’s best golf values, offering an experience that’s enjoyable and affordable. The facility has received accolades from a variety of outlets, including Golf Digest and Greenskeeper.org. The championship par-71 layout is nestled in the hills of San Juan Capistrano, conveniently located near major points of Orange County as well as Los Angeles and San Diego counties. The clubhouse features a full-service bar and grill and recently opened a 4,500-square-foot patio.

What’s hot: San Juan Hills has a new twilight golf league, weekly skins game and “Nine & Dine” events for couples. The course also is offering weekly junior golf camps for the summer. The course is currently offering a special promotion for Southland Golf readers that includes a green fee with cart and a free 15-pack of Top Flite golf balls.

Shorecliffs Golf Course | Take a video tour
(949) 492-1177
Why you’ll like it: Since coming under new management this year, Shorecliffs has solidified its reputation as one of the best values in southern Orange County. The San Clemente layout is in superb condition, with the greens in amazing shape and the fairways as lush as ever. What makes the venue even more intriguing is the array of special offers available in addition to the course’s already affordable rates.

What’s hot: Juniors can play for $8 Monday through Friday after 1:30 p.m. and for $13 on weekends. The popular Dawn Patrol special continues this summer, where weekday play before 7 a.m. includes a free breakfast.

Regular weekday rates are $38; twilight rates (after 1:30 p.m.) are $30; and super twilight rates (3:30 p.m.) are $23. On weekends, those rates are $55, $39 and $28, respectively, with cart included.
