Pelican Hill Golf Club

Newport Coast
(949) 467-6800 • pelicanhill.com
Starting this month, golfers can sign up for the 2010 Preferred Program at Pelican Hill, which also includes access to the Preferred Program at Irvine’s Oak Creek Golf Club.

Enrollment is $625 and enables members to play any day of the week at Pelican Hill for $193, a $77 savings off the regular guest rate. Members can book tee times up to two weeks in advance — what’s more, members can bring up to three guests to play at the same preferred rate.

Additionally, those in the Preferred Program have access to the evening green fee rate — which begins two hours after twilight — one hour early.

Preferred Program participants also have access to periodic special offers.

Pelican Hill also has an array of stay-and-play packages available, including the Golf/Spa Experience. For more information, visit the website or call the resort.

Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club
Mission Viejo
(949) 305-5100 • arroyotrabuco.com
Beginning Sunday, November 15, Arroyo Trabuco will begin taking applications for its 2010 Members Club. Benefits include green fee and merchandise discounts and access to member-only tournaments.

There also have been two prominent staff changes at the Mission Viejo facility.

There’s a new on-site clubfitter — Jeff Sy, who can handle new equipment fittings as well as club repair, and has many offerings from top manufacturers.

In August, Arroyo Trabuco’s restaurant, O’Neill’s Bar and Grill, hired Jeff Platt to be the new chef. Platt has helped usher in a revamped menu at O’Neill’s, with favorites like skirt steak and a lobster B.L.T.

O’Neill’s still has regular events for golfers and diners alike: Pizza and Pinot Night is held every Tuesday, while a Santa Maria barbecue and wine tasting is held on the first Wednesday of every month.

Shorecliffs Golf Club
San Clemente
(949) 492-1177 • shorecliffsgolfclub.com
Since the beginning of 2009, the owner, staff, and new management at Shorecliffs have dedicated themselves to improving every aspect of the facility, from upgrading the quality of the course to adding a new fleet of 2010 model golf carts. The management also has decided to limit the number of daily rounds, promoting less wear and tear on the turf.

Another new development at the facility is the addition of Chef John Kelly to the food and beverage staff. Kelly has brought a variety of favorites to the daily menu, including New England Clam Chowder.

Also, local instructor Mardell Wilkins, with both PGA and LPGA certification, has begun teaching at Shorecliffs.
Shorecliffs is one of Orange County’s top values, with a variety of discounts available. The Dawn Patrol special includes an 18-hole round of golf and breakfast prior to 7 a.m. for $25 on weekdays, and a similar package is available for nine holes prior to 8 a.m. for $15. Shorecliffs also has an unlimited monthly golf pass for $239.

Talega Golf Club
San Clemente
(949) 369-6226 • talegagolfclub.com
Talega, which has been under new management since the beginning of 2009, has remained a local favorite thanks to lower green fees and an array of specials at the Signature Grille. A tee-to-green overseeding was completed on the course last month and the layout figures to be in prime shape for the remainder of ’09 and into 2010.

This month, those concerned about finding the time to prepare a holiday meal can choose Talega’s Thanksgiving Day Take-Home Feast, which can be ordered for parties between four and 15 people and can include up to three bottles of Cabernet, an herb-encrusted free range turkey, lots of side dishes and pie. Call the restaurant or visit the site for complete details and pricing options.

Brunch is offered every Sunday at the Signature Grille between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and includes a top-shelf Bloody Mary bar. Every Friday night from 5 to 9 p.m., choose from one of three options: $10 prime rib with baked potato, $12 all-you-can-eat Louisiana shrimp and creole rice, or a $20 New England clam bake that include lobster and crab. Fridays also are Talega on Tap nights, when all house and well drinks are $4 apiece.

Talega also continues to offer unlimited golf memberships, which start at $6,000 for individuals and are valid one year from the date of purchase.

Some time before the end of the year, the second phase, which includes a new guest lounge, will be ready. The third and final phase is on schedule to wrap up early next year — the primary focus will be a remodel of the bar and grill. Creative planning has enabled San Juan Hills to remain operational on all fronts during construction.
