![]() The Links at Terranea features a nine-hole par-3 layout with views of the Pacific. Bigger isn’t always better in golf. Sure, 300-yard drives are fun, but they don’t necessarily lead to lower scores. A similar analogy can be drawn for golf courses. “I think golfers should spend more time on par-3 and executive courses,” said Bob Madsen, PGA teaching professional and director of instruction at El Cajon’s Sycuan Resort. Par-3 courses are just that — every hole is a par 3. Executive courses are generally a bit lengthier and have a few par-4 holes mixed in. Of course you’re good enough to play regulation-length golf courses. But with the many benefits par-3 and executive layouts present, why wouldn’t you want to play them more often? Here are some great benefits offered by local professionals and industry insiders: Enjoy golf at any age and skill level In addition to its regulation-length Willow Glen and Oak Glen courses — each a par 72 — Sycuan Resort is known for its testy par-3 Pine Glen course. “Families, friends, near novices and golfers of all skill levels and from all walks of life usually walk the course in under three hours,” Madsen said. “Some only play par-3 courses and call it ‘small G,’” he added. “Others work their way up to the big course using what skills they have honed and comfort they have achieved in the shallow water of the par-3 course. Consider the big courses as the deep end of the pool.” Sharpen your short game “Executive courses are great for iron practice. They keep you busier with your irons,” said Dan La Rue, general manager of Brea’s Birch Hills Golf Course, where five of 18 holes are par 4s and the rest are par 3s. “A wide variety of players don’t want to play 400- and 500-yard holes that often, so executive-length courses are very good for junior, senior and women golfers,” La Rue said. “And yet our course is just as challenging as some of the longer courses. When you factor in our slope and par, players will find that the score they post here is comparable to what they normally post at a regulation course.” The three nine-hole layouts at Ashwood Golf Course in Apple Valley offer as much challenge as any regulation course, said golf shop manager Lowell Smith, noting that total yardage runs from 6,000 to 6,600 for the 27 holes. Enjoy unique layouts in jaw-dropping settings Aliso Creek Golf Course winds through a coastal canyon just off Pacific Coast Highway. Players look up to see a towering canyon and are frequently met by deer that wander onto the course. “You can come out here, get your golf fix and get on with your day,” said J.D. Blashaw, manager of golf operations at Aliso Creek, a nine-hole executive layout in Laguna Beach with five par 4s and four par 3s. The oceanfront Links at Terranea in Rancho Palos Verdes offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The three nine-hole loops at Ashwood wind through beautiful High Desert terrain. And the Pine Glen course at Sycuan is anything but basic thanks to the course’s terrain of mountains, natural rock outcroppings, and aged oaks and sycamores.
