After nearly two years of construction at one of the top playing destinations in the Southland, Pelican Hill Golf Club is scheduled to reopen in November. Pelican Hill’s Ocean North and Ocean South layouts have been undergoing a “re-perfecting” process by architect Tom Fazio, who designed the tracks when they opened in 1991. One of the key facets of the process is an overhaul of the grasses. Tees and fairways have been replaced with Tifway II hybrid bermuda, a surface known for staying consistent regardless of weather conditions and not needing overseeding. The rough is a custom blend of rye and tall fescue, a mix intended to provide a scenic contrast to the fairways. “It’s a totally different look than before,” said Pelican Hill general manager Steve Friedlander. Other changes include the addition of 25 bunkers on the two courses and a new drainage system. While many physical improvements will be evident when patrons return to Pelican Hill, one thing remains the same — the magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean. “With two golf courses in a location like this, it’s difficult for golfers not to get distracted,” Friedlander said. |
