![]() Salt Creek has a variety of holes to test golfers of all skill levels. Don’t consider this an endorsement as much as an opportunity to explain why Salt Creek is worthy of a look. The course, which was named “Best Value” in San Diego County by greenskeeper.org, is one of the region’s most diverse and fun. Holes go up, down, left, right and play long, medium and short. There’s risk-reward, narrow landing areas, and opportunities to let it rip. To sum it up, there’s something for everyone. It’s difficult to pick a favorite hole, but it’s tough to argue against the par-4 14th. I act manly and play it at 462 yards from the tips, but even for someone who hits it a decent distance off the tee, it’s a challenge to carry it approximately 230 yards uphill to the beginning of the fairway. From there, it’s a long iron, hybrid or fairway wood into a green that runs slightly downhill and has an opening, so running the ball up is an option. Designed by Cary Bickler and John Cook, Salt Creek incorporates a links feel on many holes — cool square tee boxes, wispy grasses bordering the fairways and not many trees at all. It won’t be able to shake a modern course label, but it’s certainly not a cookie-cutter concept. Now is a good time to check out Salt Creek because of the 2010 Players Club program. For a $49 annual fee, golfers can play on weekdays with cart for $39 (seniors for $35). For $79, weekends also are included, with Saturday rates at $59 and Sunday and holiday fees at $49. Salt Creek Golf Club: By the Numbers 6,855: Yardage from the tips. There are five sets of tees, with the most forward option measuring 4,814 yards. 73.4: Course rating from the tips. It’s a decent challenge, but not a layout that beats golfers over the head. 79: Number of bunkers. The only hole that doesn’t have a greenside sand trap is the 367-yard par-4 fifth hole. 11: Number of trees. That’s a small number for any course, adding to the links-style environment. 62: Course record. This has been shot twice by Coronado resident and Nationwide Tour member Brian Smock. 150: Elevation climb, in feet, from the bottom of the fairway to the green on the 404-yard par-4 ninth hole. 39: Players Club rate, in dollars, on weekdays. Saturday rate is $59, while Sundays and holidays are $49 (cart included). For more information on Salt Creek, call (619) 482-4666 or visit saltcreekgc.com. |
