As one of the premier metropolitan golf areas in the United States, San Diego County has a handful of public courses that have received a 4.5-star rating from Golf Digest.

Count Chula Vista’s Salt Creek Golf Club among that quintet.

“That’s without a clubhouse,” added director of sales and marketing Grant Wingate. “The course speaks for itself, and right now it’s probably in the best shape it’s ever been.”

With five sets of tees, generous fairways and links elements such as fescue grass, Salt Creek is a fun experience for players of all levels. Par-4 holes such as the uphill ninth and expansive 14th provide a challenge, while scenic gems like the 10th and 18th offer birdie opportunities.

To kick off 2009, the facility is offering three weekday specials. First, there’s Military Monday, when anyone with a valid military identification can play for $35, with cart.

Next, there’s Taco Tuesday. In step with one of the most popular San Diego restaurant traditions, Salt Creek is offering a taco meal for all Tuesday golfers.

Finally, there’s Walking Wednesday, in which the normally cart-only golf course allows players to walk for a $12 discount off green fees.

“We’re just trying to do something different and spark some different interests,” Wingate said.

Save big with the Crossings Club
Headed into its second full year of operation, the Crossings at Carlsbad has established itself as a top-notch course in northern San Diego County.

The KemperSports-managed facility has a great promotion for 2009 — the Crossings Club, where members receive exclusive golf and food and beverage e-specials, plus two free rounds Monday through Thursday (holidays excluded); a Super Sunday rate (members and their guests pay the non-discounted Friday rate on Sundays); discounts for the range, golf shop and Canyons restaurant; and complimentary items such as a logo towel and bag tag.

Club members also have access to play the course for exclusive outings, usually one per month. For example, there will be a morning shotgun event on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Crossings Club annual membership costs $179 for Carlsbad residents, $189 for San Diego County residents and $279 for all others.

“It literally pays for itself,” General Manager Jeff Perry said.

The par-72 course, which has five sets of tees and stretches 6,835 yards from the tips, has matured nicely since opening in August 2007. Rolling terrain, elevation changes and strategic bunkering make the Greg Nash-crafted layout one of the most memorable in the area.

A 28,000-square-foot clubhouse has been nationally recognized for its design and amenities, which include the tasty fare at Canyons.

Morgan Run’s new spa complements 27 holes of golf
Rancho Santa Fe’s Morgan Run Club & Resort unveiled its new Spa Retreat last November. Featuring wide heated beds and a soothing aura, the spa has become a hit among members, local residents and resort guests.

“People are lining up to get spa treatments,” general manager Jim MacDonough said. “We’ve had full spa days ever since we opened.”

MacDonough said some of the most popular spa treatments are the Warm Sea Stone and Swedish massages, and the seven types of facials also have been well received.

A new two-story Fitness Center also recently opened, with Techogym and other equipment available.

Located close to fun attractions around San Diego County, Morgan Run continues to offer stay-and-play packages for 2009.

In the spring, the facility will once again host the San Diego Celebrity Classic. Some of the biggest stars of the Celebrity Players Tour have participated in the past, including John Elway, Jerry Rice and Mario Lemieux. This year’s tournament is set for April 22-26.

Any combination of Morgan Run’s three nine-hole layouts is a fun test for all golfers.

TaylorMade Performance Lab coming to Sycuan
Later this year, San Diego’s Sycuan Resort will be the newest Southland location for a TaylorMade Performance Lab.

The TaylorMade Performance system utilizes motion capture technology to generate a sequenced three-dimensional model of a golfer’s swing. During a two-hour session, pertinent swing traits such as clubhead path, launch angle and X-factor are recorded using advanced cameras, and clubs are then matched to the golfer based on the data gathered.

“It’s absolutely cutting edge. This is big for us,” said Tim McGill, director of sales and marketing for the resort.

The TaylorMade facility will be in the structure currently occupied by the clubhouse for Pine Glen, Sycuan’s 18-hole par-3 course. It is slated to open in the first quarter this year.

Another planned change early this year is a series of renovations to the resort’s 100 hotel rooms. The decor will reflect more of a boutique style, and flatscreen TVs, bathroom enhancements and new furniture also are part of the plan.

With 54 holes, Sycuan is one of the most comprehensive facilities in the region. For 2009, three of the facility’s instructional entities — Premier Academy, Couples Retreat and School of Golf Exclusively for Women — are going to be expanded, and the Premier program has been changed from a three-day experience to two days.

Mt. Woodson to install new sand in bunkers
Mt. Woodson Golf Club might be one of the shorter tests in San Diego County, but what the par-70 layout lacks in length it makes up for with holes that call for strategy off the tee and into the greens.

The Ramona track also has well- placed bunkers that will get a facelift this year with a sand restoration project. The new sand, which will be softer and more playable, will be replaced progressively so interference on daily play will be minimal.
“It’s going to be a huge project. We’re getting 100 tons of new sand,” general manager Chaz Bakel said.

With a tranquil atmosphere and a breathtaking landscape in the mountains, Mt. Woodson also is in great shape for the new year. Thanks to the addition of new maintenance equipment, it figures to stay that way for the duration of ’09.

Golfers can save money with a 2009 Players Club card. In addition to green fee discounts every day, members receive one complimentary round between Monday and Thursday, in addition to discounts for guests.

“When you go from our rack rate to our Players Club rate, there are times when you can save up to 40 percent,” Bakel said.

Save on green fees and range balls at Meadow Lake
Escondido’s Meadow Lake Golf Club is a visual treat, featuring scenic views of the San Jacinto and San Bernardino mountain ranges.

The course, which offers a variety of holes, has a 2-for-1 deal to usher in 2009, where one player pays the green fee and the other the cart fee after 11:30 a.m. The cost is $29 on weekdays and $39 on weekends.

There also is an unlimited range card special for $300 for players who frequently use Meadow Lake’s driving range, which has both grass tees and mats.

Another new twist for 2009 is the Player Development Program. Group lessons are available for up to six players for $99 per hour. Junior clinics also will be offered on weekends, where each child  pays $10 an hour for a clinic held from 9-10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Call Charlie Kong to find out more.

‘Golf & Grub’ at Eagle Crest
Escondido’s Eagle Crest Golf Club will continue its popular “Golf & Grub” into the new year.

Until the end of January, players pay $40 on weekdays and $60 on weekends and receive a round of golf, with cart, a deli sandwich, chips and fountain drink.

The “Eagle Pass” also will return. The three-tiered program offers 10 rounds at different times of day: $200 nets 10 twilight rounds any day; $300 provides weekday times or weekend twilight times; and $400 allows access anytime.

Open since 1992, Eagle Crest entertains golfers with a layout that has fun doglegs and picturesque water features.

The par-4 fourth hole isn’t long — only 349 yards from the tips — but a sharp angle to the left and four large fairway bunkers call for precision off the tee.
