The Golfing Nomad

An exercise in precision

Mt. Woodson Golf Club proves that a challenging course doesn’t have to be stretched to its limits.

As a golfer who has grown up with the equipment technology boom, I’m not ashamed to say I’m partial to courses where I can comfortably pull driver more often than not on longer holes.

However, I admire a course whose layout stresses the importance of hitting fairways and greens — like Ramona’s Mt. Woodson Golf Club.

A par-70 course in the rustic mountains of northern San Diego County, Mt. Woodson barely outstrips 6,000 yards from the tips. But an array of challenging tee shots and well-placed bunkers on all 18 holes force you to work hard for every birdie opportunity.

Trust your instincts
A glance at Mt. Woodson’s scorecard reveals that seven of the 10 par-4s play under 350 yards, and the three par-5s measure 510, 520 and 533 yards.

While the teeth of the course can seem fang-like to players who spray the ball, the Lee Schmidt-Brian Curley design is built in such a way that trusting the terrain in front of you is the most beneficial strategy.

Take the 419-yard, par-4 fifth. From the tee, the green is visible straight ahead, but a lake and fairway bunker in that sight line should be enough to suggest that flying the trouble to a sliver of short grass isn’t worth the risk. Stick to the cozy fairway on the right and you’ll have a manageable approach.

Nos. 15 and 17 are both driveable par 4s that slope downhill and to the left. Long hitters are welcome to try to hit the green with a draw, but trying to negotiate your ball around each hole’s greenside bunkers, slopes and brush — mostly invisible off the tee — is like trying to play pinball with broken paddles. Staying conservative with a hybrid or long iron off the tee on each hole can lead to easy birdies.

Enjoy the ride
With superb conditions and lots of boulders dotting the hills that border the layout, Mt. Woodson is one of the most scenic venues in San Diego.

Even the tough holes are visual treats. After an adventurous drive over a 450-foot wooden bridge following the second hole, the 186-yard, par-3 third offers a great view of the hillside and a downhill tee shot. The 190-yard, par-3 ninth is aptly named “The Chute,” since stately trees line the hole all the way up to the green.

The most difficult hole is the par-4 12th — a picturesque 432-yarder that requires a lengthy carry off the tee and an approach to an elevated green.

Friendly vibe
While Mt. Woodson is relatively short, it isn’t a methodical mission of target golf.

Lots of elevation changes and relatively generous fairways give it a serene character that will keep players of all skill levels on their toes. Though there are some situations in which shot views are partially obstructed, the layout isn’t deceitful, because a safe path is always laid out in front of you.

The course is located off Highway 67 in Ramona, about 30 minutes from downtown San Diego. Green fees, with cart, range from $72 Monday-Thursday and up to $97 on Saturday, with Southern California residents entitled to discounted fees of $50 on weekdays and $75 on Saturdays. There also is a 9-hole weekday rate of $25, cart included.
