San Diego Golf Report

The Crossing at Carlsbad celebrates its first year of operation – plus other news and updates.

The Crossings at Carlsbad marked its one-year anniversary of public play last month.

It was certainly a productive year.

The newest course in northern San Diego County hosted nearly 58,000 rounds of golf during its first 12 months, and the facility was a hit with local diners as well, with nearly 90 percent of visitors to Canyons Restaurant going there exclusively to eat.

“We are proud that in its inaugural year, the Crossings at Carlsbad is not only representative of who we are as a community, both in the quality of the course and its clubhouse, but also lives up to the area’s reputation for golf excellence,” Carlsbad Mayor Claude A. “Bud” Lewis said in a statement.

One of the course’s popular deals is the Crossings Club, a membership program that includes discounts on green fees and merchandise as well as complimentary logo items such as a shirt and towel. A new version of the program will be available on Oct. 1, where members will get discounts and benefits, in addition to more frequent outings, such as a Crossings Club championship.

“It’s going to be a lot more connected with the community. We’re really excited about it,” said general manager Jeff Perry.
Another way patrons can save at the Crossings at Carlsbad is through its E-Club. By signing up through the course’s website (click on “Join our E-Club”), members can enjoy savings through weekend specials that aren’t readily advertised.

Four Seasons Resort Aviara to feature redesigned clubhouse, Steakhouse.

Featuring opulent accommodations and San Diego’s only course designed by Arnold Palmer, Carlsbad’s Four Seasons Resort Aviara is one of the region’s prime destinations.

Aviara’s golf clubhouse and the Argyle Steakhouse are each undergoing an exciting redesign this month. The changes are inspired in part by the resort’s unique locale beside the tidal wetlands of the Batiquitos Lagoon. The interior will be revitalized to reflect a “California Coastal” impression, according to Beverly Hills interior design firm Cheryl Rowley Design, which is heading the project.

In a departure from the clubhouse’s current traditional design, the new space will boast a more modern and elegant ambiance.

“The Argyle Steakhouse, which opened last year, has already been a tremendous success with hotel guests and locals alike,” said Robert Cima, regional vice president and general manager of Four Seasons Resort Aviara. “The final touch on this gem will be this beautiful redesign. The nontraditional steakhouse menu, intuitive service and new décor will result in an unparalleled dining experience in San Diego.”

To accommodate this redesign, both the Argyle Steakhouse and upper clubhouse level are closed this month and will reopen in early October. The golf shop and lower level of the clubhouse will remain open and operate as usual during this period.

The par-72 course, which features four sets of tees ranging from 5,007 to 7,007 yards, is a memorable coastal layout consistently ranked as one of the best resort venues in the country.

GPS among enhancements at Sycuan Resort
El Cajon’s Sycuan Resort has added GPS to its cart fleet to help golfers navigate the facility’s three layouts.

Other recent improvements include a fleet of E-Z-GO carts and an easy-to-use range ball dispenser.

At the 100-room resort lodge, all guest rooms will be renovated, a project that will be completed early next year. New beds, televisions, linens and furniture will create a more “boutique feel,” said director of sales and marketing Tim McGill.
“It’s definitely going to be nicer than it is now,” he said.

Resort patrons and locals have been enjoying the Primrose Spa, which debuted last October. An eclectic spa menu has soothing options that won’t put too much stress on your wallet.

Sycuan is constantly running promotions, one of which is the popular “Stay & Unlimited Play” package that runs through the end of this month.

Salt Creek enjoys elite local company
One of the best measures of a course’s merit is its rating in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play.”

With its natural setting and tranquil environment, Salt Creek Golf Club has earned four-and-a-half stars, one of only a few public venues in San Diego County to earn such high praise.

“It puts us up with some of the big dogs, which is nice. It’s a true testament to the quality of the course since Synergy Golf Course Management has gotten here,” said tournament director Grant Wingate.

A par-72 track with five sets of tees that range from 4,814 to 6,855 yards, Salt Creek is a suitable test for all golfers. Some of the memorable holes are the fifth, which plays along the edge of Mt. Miguel; No. 12, which has a rolling fairway and demands accuracy from tee to green; and the 14th, which plays uphill.

Beginning Dec. 1, the Chula Vista property plans to raise its rates for tournaments and group outings. From now until then, Wingate suggests taking advantage of the current rates by booking your next tournament or group outing soon.

Oceanside’s Arrowood starting a men’s club
Arrowood Golf Club in Oceanside now offers locals the chance to participate in a men’s club.

The club, which kicks off this month, costs $85 when you sign up between now and Dec. 1. The purchase includes a men’s club membership through the end of 2009, a free round of golf, an SCGA membership, and the chance to participate in a variety of tournaments and mixers.

“We’ll have plenty of events going on,” said director of golf Eric Jeska. “It’s going to be very exciting.”

Members are entitled to green fee discounts when they play in men’s club outings every Wednesday beginning at 8 a.m. The cost is $49 (JC Players card rate), and existing JC Players members can tee it up for $44. Cart is included.
“Forty-four dollars is the lowest rate we’ve offered,” Jeska said. “We figured that’s for our most loyal members.”

Even with school back in session, the facility continues to offer a comprehensive junior golf program. For $125 a month, and with no long-term commitment, juniors have access to weekly clinics on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. There also is the option of attending one of the Saturday clinics for $20.

Another popular function has been “Ladies’ Night Out,” which is held every Saturday at 4 p.m. For $20, women can enjoy a social atmosphere that includes lessons and an occasional wine tasting.

Meadow Lake enhances course, changes staff
By the end of 2008, four holes at Escondido’s Meadow Lake Golf Club will be renovated, but the changes won’t alter playing conditions.

The ninth, a par 5 that plays 497 yards from the tips, will soon feature a waste bunker that extends about 100 yards along the right side of the hole.

While a sand trap guards the right side of the green on the par-4 11th, the left side will become more penal with the addition of a lake that’s about 100 cubic yards.

At the par-4 15th, a straightaway hole of 426 yards, two fairway bunkers will be added on the right, and the 17th will be converted from a par 4 to a par 5 that stretches just over 500 yards.

Off the course, the patio of the reopened Oak Room Grille will be enhanced with a gazebo, an addition also expected to be completed by year’s end.

Some staff changes have taken place as well, with Mike Jun, an assistant professional who is a member of the Korea PGA, and PGA apprentice Gene Laliberte available for instruction. There are also two new members of the food and beverage department: Stuart Lynch is the head chef, and Julie Smith is the bar manager.

Stay and play at Rancho Bernardo Inn
Rancho Bernardo Inn is enhancing its stay-and-play package by having a resort golf professional play with a group for the first three holes of their round.

The foursome will get tips on how to approach a layout that has hosted both PGA and LPGA tour events, as well as pointers to improve their swings. The packages are priced from $329 per night for two guests, and include the “Play with a Pro” option through Oct. 31.

Beyond the golf course, Rancho Bernardo Inn offers a nice vacation setting, with spacious guestrooms equipped with private patios or balconies, custom furnishings, plasma televisions and iPod-ready stereos. Guestroom buildings are spread over the resort grounds and linked by gardens accented with fountains.

The spa, recently ranked North America’s No. 1 resort spa in a poll by Conde Nast Traveler, features private treatment casitas in an expansive garden with relaxation enclaves. Spa guests also have access to the saline swimming pool lined with cabanas.

Dining is also a pleasure at the Inn. El Bizcocho has received the city's highest rating by the Zagat Survey, and Veranda features an expansive patio overlooking the golf course.

Morgan Run’s Spa and Sports Center near debut
A project five years in the making is almost ready to be unveiled at Morgan Run Club & Resort in Rancho Santa Fe.

The Spa and Sports Center will open to members and resort guests in late October or early November. The facility will have a zero-entry pool, locker rooms, fitness equipment from Technogym and a spa featuring Zen gardens and seven treatment rooms with heated beds.

“It’s a very exciting time,” said general manager Jim MacDonough. “We’re so close to seeing our dream realized.”
The Spa and Sports Center will be accommodating to families, too. A children’s splash zone will complement the pool, and babysitting and kids’ programs can occupy youngsters while their parents participate in an array of exercise classes or use amenities at their leisure.

Morgan Run, which has 27 holes of golf and 11 tennis courts, is currently offering sport and racquet club memberships and a limited number of golf memberships. There are reduced initiation fees from now until the Spa and Sports Center opens.
“It does behoove you to join now,” MacDonough said.

‘Eagle Pass’ highlights specials at Eagle Crest
Eagle Crest Golf Club in Escondido is offering special deals and packages for players throughout the rest of the year.

The “Eagle Pass” is a three-tiered program, where $200 nets 10 twilight rounds any day of the week, $300 provides 10 rounds on weekdays and during twilight hours on weekends; and $400 provides 10 rounds to be used any time. All three levels include 10 free buckets of range balls.

The facility also has a “Golf & Grub” special that runs through Nov. 17. The deal includes green fee, cart, lunch, fountain drinks and range balls. It’s available Monday through Thursday ($45 per person and $39 for seniors) and Sunday after 10 a.m. ($59 per person).

Have your holiday party at Doubletree Golf Resort
It’s never too early to start planning for the holiday season, and San Diego’s Doubletree Golf Resort has created a great venue for small companies and groups looking to mingle and enjoy themselves in a fun atmosphere.

The “Holiday Extravaganza” will take place Friday, Dec. 5 at the resort’s spacious Heritage Ballroom, which will feature a festive “Wonderland of Snow” decor. Groups or companies of at least two people can pay $86 per person to enjoy a night of dinner and dancing with hors d’oeurves, a buffet dinner, a full-service cash bar and a Viennese cash coffee bar.

All taxes and service charges are included for the event, which runs from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., and there’s also a glass of wine included with dinner for those of legal drinking age.

“The Holiday Extravaganza is ideal for companies that would like to have a party, but don’t have a lot of money,” said director of sales and marketing Jeanette Eddery. “It’s almost the same as if you were buying a New Year’s Eve package through a hotel.”

Another exceptional perk of this event is a special hotel rate of $69 per room on the day of the event. So after partying the night away, guests can wake up the next day and play the championship golf course.
