![]() No doubt about it, San Vicente Resort in Ramona is a little bit country. But play a few holes of the Ted Robinson-designed course and you'll realize it's also a little bit rock 'n' roll. Altogether, this golf destination is an entertaining variety show featuring idyllic surroundings and challenging golf that makes for an enjoyable getaway. The quaint resort off Highway 78 is perfect for families. In fact, expect to mingle with the locals, as families who live in Country Estates congregate at San Vicente to use the recreational swimming pool, four tennis courts, grass driving range with putting and chipping areas, restaurant and sports bar, banquet room and a nearby equestrian center. On Friday nights during the summer, you'll find lots of kids on floats as they watch a movie being screened poolside. The resort is convenient enough for a just-the-girls or just-the-guys weekender, yet far enough away that you truly soak in a change of scenery and bucolic ambiance. Its 29 hotel rooms were renovated late last year with new carpet, paint and traditional-style fixtures and furnishings. The rooms come with two queen-size beds or one king-size bed, a mini-fridge and coffee maker, and all have golf course views from a spacious balcony or patio. The par-72 course plays from 5,501 to 6,633 yards and offers a putter's paradise, as the well-groomed greens roll true from the morning to late afternoon. Conditions on the 1971-built course were holding up well in early August and the natural countryside provides variety and challenge. The course plays tougher than its slope rating of 123, with the Robinson touch evident in some elevated tees and narrow, tree-lined fairways. The afternoon wind blowing through the canyon will set up many holes to PGA Tour level, particularly on the back nine. A gentler and kinder Robinson throws in a few bail-out areas near landing zones and next to greens. But heck, forget about all that. Just enjoy your time communing with the giant oak, acorn and cottonwood trees that dot the course and the creek that meanders through it. And breathe in the tranquility that comes with finding a good value, as a prime-time round at San Vicente goes for about $65 and a room runs less than $100. At these rates, you can afford to take the family to the local attractions or the spouse to nearby Barona Casino. But don't be surprised if they'd rather kick it on the ranch. SG |
