![]() The North Course at Shadow Hills has holes that range from 110 to 211 yards (COURTESY: Shadow Hills). “This is a fun, fast alternative to an 18-hole course,” said Lance Merrihew, regional marketing director for Billy Casper Golf, which manages the property. While the North layout won’t require a driver, it’s not a pitch-and-putt property. There are four sets of tees and “no hole is shorter than 100 yards and there are some quite challenging shots if you play from the back tees,” Merrihew said. The par-3 course is part of an expansion of the Sun City housing development. “Even in these rough economic times, the development is Del Webb’s number one performing community,” Merrihew said of the developer. Designed by Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley, the course ranges in length from 1,059 yards to 1,505 yards. From the standard tees, the shortest hole is 110 yards, with the longest 211. The addition of water, including a couple of island waterfalls, adds to the aesthetics, and grass covers about half of the tee-to-green areas. The rest are filled out by natural waste areas. The unveiling of this course is another positive sign for the golf industry in the Coachella Valley as the game continues to solidify itself amidst a recovering economy. Late last year, Escena Golf Club in Palm Springs re-opened following a two-year closure, while facilities like Desert Dunes and Desert Willow have invested in comprehensive renovations. Though in a residential community, the course is open to the public. Green fees are $25 for nine holes and $39 for repeat play, including cart.
