Established: 1988 Designer: Pete, Perry and Alicia Dye; remodeled in 2000 by John Fought and Tom Lehman 6,947 yards, Par 72 Amenities: 38,000-square-foot clubhouse. Why it’s on our list: This could be the most golf-centric club on our list. “We’re all about golf,” said chief executive officer Bruce Bennetts. “Good golfers can come here and get a great test of golf and they appreciate the camaraderie of playing with other low handicappers. But it’s also a place you can really improve your game since we have a great practice facility and golf simulator.” It’s a very tight course built on only 95 acres, and you have to hit it straight. The 2000 remodel, which came after members took ownership of the course in 1999, opened the layout up and made it easier in some respects, but it also added more bunkering and contoured greens. Bet you didn’t know: Annika Sorenstam, Tom Lehman and Phil Mickelson are members. Wow factor: The average handicap index of members is 12, ranking it 14th on a Golf Digest index list of private clubs with the best players.
