![]() The layout at Hacienda is dotted with old-school charm. Established: 1920 Designer: Willie Watson 6,955 yards, Par 71 Amenities: 36,000-square-foot clubhouse; wine tasting room; junior swimming and diving program; executive chef Shushan Madenlian recently was named one of Southern California’s elite private golf club chefs. Why it’s on our list: One of the oldest and most storied private clubs in the western United States. It’s a Golden Era classic and, though Watson is credited with the design, William P. Bell and George C. Thomas also were involved. “We have everything you would expect to find in a private golf club or golf course. But what further distinguishes us from so many courses of that era is whereas most of them were short by today’s standards, our course is championship length at nearly 7,000 yards,” general manager Frank Cordeiro said. A recent $16 million renovation project included a new clubhouse and course enhancements by architect John Harbottle. Another interesting thing: It’s just a golf club. “If you say country club, members might get offended,” Cordeiro said. “They consider themselves members of a golf club. We do have a swimming pool, but what members are most proud of is the golf course and the tradition.” Bet you didn’t know: Major champions Gene Sarazen and Jock Hutchison competed in a match at Hacienda in the 1930s. Also, since there are only 400 members, tee times are not required. Wow factor: The course record of 62 is held by Tiger Woods.
