![]() La Quinta’s Madison Club is a desert oasis designed by Tom Fazio. Established: 2006 Designer: Tom Fazio 7,426 yards, Par 72 Amenities: Comfort stations offer everything from beef jerky — made from filet mignon — to cocktails; refrigeration systems under the greens keep the turf cooled; full-time tailors and shoemakers in the pro shop. Why it’s on our list: The current hot spot among high-end country clubs in the U.S. is the Madison Club, whose young celebrity membership has given it a large buzz (avid golfer Mark Wahlberg gave a shout-out to the club on his HBO series “Entourage”). The combination of a typically brilliant Fazio design (call it a contemporary twist on a traditional parkland course) coupled with incredible amenities makes this as prestigious, and expensive, a private club as you can imagine. Bet you didn’t know: Fazio likens the process of creating the Madison Club and transforming it into a desert oasis to that of his Shadow Creek course in Las Vegas. The latter reportedly required the moving of some 3,500 mature pine and palm trees and more than 150,000 plants to create a rolling and lush landscape out of the previously flat and barren land. Fazio’s work resulted in valleys more than 30 feet deep and the formation of lakes, ponds and streams, all within glorious view of the neighboring Santa Rosa Mountains. Wow factor: More than 5 million cubic yards of earth were moved to create the course, and every ball on the driving range is retrieved by hand to reduce noise and unsightly tire marks on the turf.
