The county’s significant population growth in the 1970s and ’80s, coupled with a golf niche that had yet to be explored, got the ball rolling on the possibilities, and Tustin Ranch Golf Club, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this month, was at the forefront. On July 10, 1989, Tustin Ranch opened its doors to the public. Featuring a scenic, well-manicured layout designed by Ted Robinson and amenities that separated it from other public courses, it quickly generated buzz among golfers — even if its price point wasn’t intriguing to everybody. “During construction, we would get inquiry phone calls saying, ‘45- and 65-dollar green fees? You’ve got to be out of your mind,’” said Steve Plummer, who has been Tustin Ranch’s general manager since 2001 and served as its superintendent for 13 years prior to that. “But then, the next call would be, ‘45- and 65-dollar green fees? That’s not enough, there will be too many people playing.’” The green fees have gone up since then, and so has the number of competitors, but Tustin Ranch has remained viable for plenty of reasons. Not only is there a premium on a memorable experience, but the facility also makes it a point to stay involved in the community. “We do everything we can to provide the best value for charity events,” Plummer said. “We’re tremendously involved in every community organization that either comes to the golf course or that the golf course should be affiliated with, like the Tustin Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and local high school golf teams.” Tustin Ranch, which last year was voted the California Golf Course Owners Association’s Course of the Year, also participates in Orange County: California’s Golf Coast and the Anaheim and Newport Beach visitor bureaus. And while a difficult economy has frightened some business leaders from any affiliation with golf, Tustin Ranch has taken a pro-active approach by creating a program for Chamber of Commerce members who can sign up for discounts on green fees as part of an annual membership. “I have to give them credit for their intuitiveness based on how the economy has affected golf courses,” said Marisa Charette, president and CEO of the Tustin Chamber. Plenty of 20th anniversary events and promotions will be held this month at Tustin Ranch, including rounds for $89 each Sunday; $45 for members and guests and $65 for the public from July 6-9; and a 1 p.m. shotgun tournament on July 10 that includes lunch and post-round food for $89. Also, the club’s monthly Music Under the Stars event on July 16 will have a Ball Drop Contest. Balls — which are $5 each or three for $10 — that drop into the hole on the big putting green are entitled to a portion of the pot, and proceeds also will help establish golf programs at elementary schools in need of financial assistance.
