The Golfing Nomad

A good find

Woods Valley isn't in a prominent location, but the layout sure is a lot of fun.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: April, 2010

The backdrop on the 10th green is one of the most scenic portions of Woods Valley Golf Club.
“Hidden gem” is a term loosely used in golf course nomenclature, but in the case of Woods Valley Golf Club, it fits.

Woods Valley is not in the most familiar section of northern San Diego County. Nestled in Valley Center, a small rural area that’s one of the last stops before the land segues into southern Riverside County, the facility has a quaint, sleepy feel.

However, there’s nothing quaint and sleepy about the golf course. Crafted by architect David Ginkel, it plays a beefy 6,670 yards at a par of 71 from the tips. Two par 4s — the 435-yard fifth and the 447-yard 11th (recently converted from a par 5) — require long drives on relatively narrow fairways and accurate approaches to greens guarded by sand and water.

There’s a lot of variety, as the front nine has an open feel while most of the back nine is tree-lined. In particular, holes 13 through 16 are all tightly guarded by oaks.

One of the coolest holes is the par-4 10th, a short test with a narrow, island-style fairway guarded by water on the left and a picturesque elevated green.

The layout can definitely yield some birdies. Between myself and my playing partner, we birdied the first four holes. But we both struggled to double bogeys on the par-4 14th after failing to curve our approach shots around a large tree blocking the angle to the green.

Woods Valley, which opened in 2004, has undergone significant improvements the last two years, as fairways have been re-sodded and all bunkers will be refurbished with Augusta white sand by this summer. There’s also a new grill at the facility.
