Golf course designers often get typecast: Pete Dye’s courses are difficult with lots of water and railroad ties; Tom Fazio’s courses are grand and sprawling; and Ted Robinson’s layouts have waterfalls and tiered greens. Vista Valley Country Club, a private facility in the canyons of north San Diego County, breaks that mold. The course, designed by Robinson in 1976, has a traditional, old-school feel with narrow fairways. At just over 6,300 yards from the back tees, the course looks short on the scorecard but plays much longer because of the premium placed on driving accuracy. The greens are well-bunkered but deviate from Robinson’s tiered style he used with success at courses such as Tustin Ranch. At Vista Valley, the putting surfaces are small and the undulations are subtle. One of the allures to members of the club is the scarcity of homes around the layout. There is a sprinkling of villas along the first four holes and some large homes on the closing holes, but none infringe on play. It’s this escape into the serenity of nature that makes the experience of playing Vista Valley so enjoyable. The par-3s play similar distances but have subtle differences. The par-5s are all classic three-shot holes and their difficulty is compounded by the small greens and bunkering. Approach shots can feel like trying to hit a dart board through a crowded room. The 15th hole is a great example. Playing uphill and into the wind, this 533-yard hole plays longer than advertised and hitting the green in regulation can be a challenge. One of the best holes is the 433-yard, par-4 fourth hole that is rated the toughest on the course. A hazard borders the right side of the fairway, and a hillside on the left makes the hole look even more narrow. One of the more entertaining holes is the par-4 13th. Playing downhill, a blind tee shot forces you to trust local knowledge and aim just right of a tall tree in the middle of the fairway. A well-struck drive can leave you with a short to middle iron into the green. The course is in excellent condition and the majority of rounds take under four hours to play. The club hosted a U.S. Senior Open qualifying event this summer and drew rave reviews from competitors. n |
